About the Position:

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning leads systematic and integrated efforts to explore the impact of university programs, curricula, services and operations. We provide meaningful data to support strategic planning and decision-making at all levels of the university, and we play a critical role in demonstrating accountability to accreditation, external entities and the general public. Our commitment is to foster a campus-wide culture of data-informed decision-making, continuous improvement, and teaching and learning innovations. We seek an analytical and data driven individual to join our team as a Research Analyst (Research Technician III). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

The Research Analyst performs a wide range of institutional research and other data assignments providing analytical and technical support for university initiatives such as university-wide reporting, educational effectiveness, student success, quality assurance, and strategic decision-making. Involves working independently on project design, data collection and cleaning, database creation, data analysis, analytical interpretation, and preparation of reports with only very general direction or oversight by the Director of Institutional Research. Investigates, analyzes and reports on data inquiries from university constituencies. Responds to external surveys and ad hoc requests. Updates department website, and develops and maintains dashboards. Supports university and disciplinary accreditation, program and center review processes, and assessment processes. Other duties as assigned


Essential Qualifications:
Knowledges and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of research techniques, including the planning of studies and investigations, the determining of variables and the developing of reference materials; thorough knowledge of research reporting techniques; general knowledge of machine tabulation techniques and the programming of data; thorough knowledge of the techniques and treatment of data such as simple correlation methods, trend analysis, frequency distribution analysis, sampling techniques, hypothesis testing and methods of interval estimation; familiarity with the principles of personnel management and effective supervision and ability to direct the work of Others. Ability to reason logically and capacity for independent and creative thinking on research problems; ability to develop techniques for handling a large variety of detailed data and ability to analyze these data; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; ability to speak and write effectively; ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action. Experience: Three years of progressively responsible technical research or statistical experience including or supplemented by one year in the interpretation and graphic presentation of data. Graduate study in the social sciences, economics, mathematics, statistics, public or business administration or engineering may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. (Additional qualifying professional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree (MA, MS, MBA, MPA, Ed.D., Ph.D.) from an accredited college or university in the social sciences or another discipline that includes a heavy emphasis on statistical analysis, research methodology, information system, decision science, and computer applications. Five years of progressively responsible experience in research, evaluation, and data analysis in a higher education environment, preferably within a comprehensive university setting. Experience in use of web-based interfaces for data transfer. Experience in production of print-/web ready output from data, reports, charts, and tables produced by SPSS. Experience simultaneously analyzing multiple large complex databases. Experience conducting mixed-method research (quantitative and qualitative). Experience developing Tableau Dashboards (or similar data visualization tools). Mastery in use of MS Office suite including the ability to import data/tables from other sources. Experience with the development, modification, and maintenance of websites. Proven teamwork skills in a fast-paced environment. Professional experience at a CSU campus. Experience using PeopleSoft Query tools. Experience with developing programs in a statistical programming language; Ability to write SPSS (or equivalent) syntax to produce analyses. Ability to reason logically and capacity for independent and creative thinking on research problems. Ability to develop techniques for handling a large variety of detailed data and ability to analyze these data (quantitative and qualitative).

Experience with query programming languages such as SQL. Basic understanding of database architecture, data warehousing, and query operations.

Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of constituents.
