Panda Express Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asian American Studies

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Dec 20, 2023
Deadline:

The Program in Asian American Studies (ASAM) at Penn invites applications for the Panda Express Postdoctoral Fellowship in Asian American Studies. This one-year fellowship is part of the current expansion of ASAM, which celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2022 with a cluster hire of three new faculty members. With the generous support of the Panda CommUnity Fund, this initiative will support a total of five positions over the 2023-2026 academic years.

Responsibilities

Today, nearly one-third of the undergraduates at Penn are Asian and Asian American. In recent years, demand for ASAM courses and programming has skyrocketed. The Panda Express Postdoctoral Fellowship builds on this momentum by expanding scholarship, research, and intellectual opportunities in Asian American studies at Penn. Responsibilities of the selected fellow will include teaching 1 course per semester (fall and spring), planning an event or workshop, and actively participating in ASAM programming over the course of the fellowship year.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a scholar with training in any aspect of Asian American studies. We are particularly interested in the fields of Psychology, Music, Political Science, or Economics; however, all candidates working in either disciplinary or interdisciplinary fields are encouraged to apply. The applicant must have a demonstrated scholarly and teaching record in the Asian American studies and must have completed a Ph.D. in the humanities or social sciences within the past four years.

We seek candidates who share our strong commitment to research, teaching and mentoring, and to a scholarly community shaped by values of inclusive excellence. The School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania is committed to cultivating and sustaining a community of students, scholars, researchers, and staff that reflects the diversity of our world. We nurture working and learning environments that are affirming, equitable, and inclusive. As a community, we are committed to thoughtful discussions and dynamic interactions as we strive for an environment where everyone is supported and valued. Please see our School's Inclusion and Antiracism Initiatives to learn more about our active priorities: https://www.sas.upenn.edu/2020-inclusion-and-anti-racism-initiatives. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have permanent residence status.

Application Process

Applications should include a cover letter, CV, transcript, one writing sample, two undergraduate course descriptions with syllabi, the name and contact information for two recommenders. (If the candidate has not yet defended their dissertation, please include a letter from the dissertation supervisor confirming completion of degree by September 1, 2024.) Review of applications will begin January 31, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled.

Start Date

The term of this appointment will begin on July 1, 2024 for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year of support conditional on performance and funding.

Salary: $65,000 with applicable benefits and an allocation for research expenses.
