Open Rank Faculty in Strategic Communications | Starting 2024-2025

The Communications Department in The Gwen Ifill College at Simmons University in Boston invites applications for an open rank (non tenure-track) appointment in Strategic Communications. Depending on the candidate's experience and professional goals, we offer several different possibilities for faculty rank and track, including teaching track, and practice track.

Candidates will have a demonstrated record of scholarship and/or professional engagement and practice at the intersections of Strategic Communications with race, gender, sexuality, indigeneity, and/or disability. Additional areas of expertise would be welcomed in multimedia, digital communications, and/or global/cross-cultural communication. Candidates should bring a wide range of communications practice and knowledge as well as their specific area of expertise in the field. We are particularly interested in a colleague whose research and teaching emphasizes advocacy and organizing for social change, justice, equity, inclusion, and belonging and who approaches communications through intersectional and/or transnational lenses.

At the graduate level, the candidate will develop and teach courses in our Masters of Science in Strategic Communications, built around and distinguished by Simmons' core values of gender, social, and racial justice and leadership. At the undergraduate level, the candidate may teach sections of one or more core, developmental and/or advanced courses in our Communications curricula. The position's workload may also involve courses in the undergraduate general education program, as well as the potential of affiliated teaching in programs such as Africana Studies, Migration Studies, and Gender and Sexuality Studies.

The teaching load will be seven courses across the academic year. Beyond teaching, duties include scholarship or creative work, remaining current and engaged in the field, advising students in Communications, and service on department, college, and university committees that advance the mission of the institution.

The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of applied communications theory, relevant scholarship and/or professional engagement and experience in CSR or DEI&B, and commitments to social justice exercised through integrative learning aimed at the professional and civic preparation of students.

The Communications Department at Simmons provides intellectually and experientially rigorous paths of study in Design, Journalism, Integrated Media, Public Relations and Marketing Communications, Web Design and Development, Social Media, and Cinema and Media Studies. The program emphasizes the development of communications skills across the visual, written, spoken, and multimodal, making meaning through attention to critical inquiry, intersectional frameworks, and audience, and professional engagement through responsibility, strategy and adaptation. We pursue these objectives in a supportive environment of collaboration, creativity, and active engagement through experiential learning led by a faculty of professionals and scholars.
