The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Environmental Horticulture and Design, Foothill College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Dean, Physical Science, Math, Engineering and Stem, instruct community college horticulture courses to a diverse student population at a college committed to student equity. The instructor will be expected to teach in a variety of topic areas. Course topic areas typically include landscape design, landscape construction, plant identification, plant maintenance, plant production, green industry business, pest management, sustainability and related horticultural topics. Additional duties include management of the Environmental Horticulture and Design program with activities such as scheduling, budgeting, marketing/recruitment, counseling, program evaluation and recruiting/training/evaluating adjunct faculty.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
2. The minimum qualifications are any bachelor's degree or higher and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. Professional experience is required when the applicant possesses a master's degree. The professional experience required must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Community College level experience teaching a variety of Horticulture lecture and laboratory classes.
2. Teaching pedagogy adaptable to a variety of learning styles including an emphasis on interactive multimedia, internet resources, and hands-on lab experiences.
3. Ability to teach and communicate effectively with students differing in age, gender, ethnicity, educational, and economic background.
4. Ability to work as a member of a team of professionals with administrators, faculty and support staff.
5. Ability to change systems of teaching delivery to meet differing student needs and able to adapt to change easily.
6. Ability to schedule courses and coordinate rooms, adjunct, loads and space shared with other programs
7. Ability to prepare reports on budgets, program review, grant applications
8. Expansion of the program to new audiences and new directions
9. Recruiting from general population, secondary schools and industry
10. Ability to work with an industry advisory board
11. Ability to recruit, orient, train and evaluate competent adjunct faculty
12. Counseling students regarding careers, coursework, registration and degree requirements

KNOWLEDGE OF:

12. Irrigation Design and Maintenance
13. Turf Management
14. Green Industry Business Management
15. Internship and service learning

Operation of Horticultural equipment which may include:

1. Large equipment such as tractors, skidsteers and all-terrain vehicles
2. Powered construction equipment such as masonry saw, chainsaw.
3. Construction tools
4. Landscape power tools such as mowers, sodcutter, rototiller.

Management of Horticultural facilities including:

1. Greenhouse
2. Nursery
3. Plant Gardens
4. Construction Lab

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Environment:

1. Indoor, classroom environment.
2. Indoor, outdoor lab environment
3. Off campus locations

Physical Abilities:

HIRING RANGE: $60,490.00 - $99,345.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
