Description
The Georgetown - Howard Center for Medical Humanities and Health Justice (MHHJ) invites applications for its Graduate Student Fellowship on our annual theme of "lore." The Graduate Student Fellowship, open to Howard and Georgetown students only, is an opportunity for students whose interdisciplinary interest sits at the intersection of humanities and health justice. The recipients are expected to conduct research in health humanities and participate and participate in the research and public activities at the Center. Recipients may also be asked to teach one course in the spring. The scholarship produced must be anchored in the Washington, DC metropolitan area (District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, Montgomery County, and Prince George's County). Fellowships offer a maximum award of $40,000 and all of the benefits of collaboration between two universities.


Qualifications
Fellowship Eligibility

  • Students in any graduate level program at Georgetown or Howard University in a relevant area of study including medicine, nursing, instructional design, bioethics, social work, the humanities, social sciences and/or the law;

  • Interdisciplinary training and education experience are a plus;

  • Willingness to work among a team;

  • Strong organizational and writing skills;

  • Ability to work independently;

  • Exemplary researching, editing, and oral communication skills;

  • Ability to research and synthesize information into curricular objectives;

  • Demonstrated ability to work collegially with a diverse professional and lay staff;

  • Scholarly initiative and creativity; and,

  • Compassion, empathy, open-mindedness, and the ability to integrate the clinical, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual, and institutional dimensions


Application Instructions
The application consists of the following components:

  • A one-page cover letter stating your interest and qualifications for the position;

  • A curriculum vitae of no more than five pages;

  • A proposed syllabus* on the MHHJ template for an undergraduate course that you would like to develop;

  • A dissertation chapter or other writing sample, and

  • A reference contact from one colleague or mentor. We will only contact the references of finalist.

Terms of Position
The typical MHHJ Graduate Fellow position runs for 9 -12 months. Fellows are expected to acknowledge the MHHJ in publications, activities, and events resulting from work supported by the Center.

Selection criteria

Eligible candidates will have a research interest in an area that shows promise for an interdisciplinary application of the humanities and health justice for the Washington, DC metropolitan area (District of Columbia; Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William County, Virginia; Montgomery and Prince George's County, Maryland). The principal criteria for selection are: (1) the overall significance of the syllabus, (2) feasible collaboration opportunities with other Center Fellows for public engagement or education, and (3) the relevance of the application to the Centers designated research theme.
