Position Information
Under the general direction of the Associate Dean of CHASS Student Academic Affairs, the Director of CHASS Majors Advising has primary responsibility for the management of undergraduate academic advising services in the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences relating to each Major within the College. Duties include, but are not limited to, supervision of departmental academic advisor supervisors as well as the Enrollment Management Supervisor in regard to advising, scheduling and enrollment related duties. The Director of Major Advising takes a lead role along side the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, in ensuring the college is actively planning and prepared to meet the requirements of the growing enrollment numbers and needs of our students. The Director of Major Advising works in partnership with the Director of CHASS College Advising to oversee management and development of academic advising services; coordination of assessment of academic advising and academic advising services; interpretation, enforcement, and administration of UC, university, and college regulations, policies, and procedures; advisement of Associate Dean of undergraduate student academic affairs issues; and oversight of Student Academic Affairs budget. The Director of CHASS Majors Advising acts as a campus-wide resource for matters pertaining to CHASS Student Academic Affairs and acts as a liaison to various units across campus, including the Registrar's office, Office of the Provost, Admissions and Recruitment, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, among others. PLEASE NOTE: University of California career employees who have passed their probationary period will receive priority consideration for this position. Minimum Requirements
Ability to compile and interpret statistical analyses regarding undergraduate student success.
Ability to anticipate academic advising program needs. Ability to interpret and administer UC Academic Senate policies. Ability to analyze policies and make alternative recommendations.
Demonstrated leadership experience in strategic planning, program development, and budgeting in order to meet unique challenges and opportunities. Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills.Ability to synthesize disparate information toward the resolution of a complex problem.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, and leadership.
Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements; project management.
Demonstrated, progressively responsible management-level experience.
Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty.
Advanced writing and speaking skills.Ability to communicate in an articulate and effective manner with a wide university audience.
Knowledge of factors that contribute to student retention and timely graduation.
Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Ability to work with and supervise a diverse staff, balancing individual personnel needs with organizational imperatives.
Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position including the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
Skills in social perceptiveness.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.


Preferred Qualifications
Minimum seven years academic advising experience. Minimum five years supervisory experience. Knowledge of UCR online student information system (SIS+). Knowledge of UCR Policies and Procedures.

Demonstrated skill in using software applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, and database applications. Knowledge of online student information systems and related.
