Job Description:
The Intercultural Collective (IC) seeks a student-centered professional to serve as Coordinator of First-Generation Programs. Using student development and customer service skills, this position will be responsible for (1) coordinating and facilitating hands-on, community-building and educational programming and events for first-gen students and (2) providing administrative and operational support for First-Gen programs including the Kessler Scholars Program.

The coordinator is an integral member of the IC, which is charged with creating a holistic, student-centered environment that cultivates community and belonging, provides resources for students personal and academic success, and connects students to opportunities for campus engagement.

The Kessler Scholars Program offers evidence-based best practices for student success and academic, professional, and personal support to help first-generation students navigate Syracuse University with a sense of belonging and purpose across all years of their undergraduate experience. The coordinator will also work closely with the other offices in the IC: Office of Multicultural affairs, Disability Cultural Center, LGBTQ Resource Center, 119 Euclid, and Center for International Services.

Qualifications:
Bachelors degree required, or an equivalent amount of education and experience.

Job Specific Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of first-generation college student support and demonstrated experience working with people with marginalized identities through an intersectional lens that includes race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, and disability, to name a few.
  • Demonstrated organizational and analytical skills as well as the ability to manage several concurrent tasks needed.
  • Familiarity with assessment and evaluation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, writing and communication skills, including workshop facilitation, are required.
  • Program and event planning experience needed.
  • Budget experience needed.
  • Experience supervising students strongly desired.
  • Understanding of social media and web design platforms and emerging technologies strongly desired.
  • Experience relevant to working with the student populations served by the LGBTQ Resource Center, Disability Cultural Center, Multicultural Affairs, 119 Euclid, or the Center for International Services a plus.
  • Ability to manage professional relations with various constituencies and represent the programs, department, and institution in a positive manner will be expected.


Responsibilities:
Program/Event Planning, Coordination, and Facilitation
Assist with or take the lead on small- and large-scale program/event planning, coordination and facilitation for the Kessler Scholars Program and on behalf of the Intercultural Collectives First-Gen Initiative, including but not limited to:
  • Coordinate contracts for speakers and various programmatic details.
  • Arrange and manage logistical elements for programs, cohort gatherings & workshops.
  • Track attendance and participant feedback for events/programs.
  • Informal support to student organizations on program planning, logistics, and evaluation.
  • Annual events such as First-Gen Welcome, National First-Generation College Day / Week, Kessler Scholars Coin Ceremony, Kessler Scholars Cohort Gatherings, and Kessler Scholars Cohort Graduation Celebrations,



First Generation Student Support, Program Implementation & Advising
  • Provide administrative and logistic support for key first-generation programs and events and other events assigned.
  • Actively encourage and recruit students to attend First-Generation and other campus events, activities, workshops and programs.
  • Support community-building programming, including staffing late-night and weekend events in support of building relationships with students.
  • Serve as an informal mentor and advisor for students who access the Intercultural Collective.
  • Partner with the Director of the Kessler Scholars Program to provide comprehensive support through wrap-around, multi-tiered services to ensure students success from admissions through graduation.
  • Meet with Kessler Scholars periodically throughout the year to provide wholistic guidance and support.
  • Assist the Director of the Kessler Scholars Program in supplying leadership and support for Kessler Peer Mentors and the Kessler Advisory Board.
  • Actively support Student Experience and Syracuse initiatives to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility.

Intercultural Collective Teamwork
  • Partner with coordinators and other staff of the Intercultural Collective in support of the programs and events of the Center for International Services, Disability Cultural Center, LGBTQ Resource Center, 119 Euclid, and Multicultural Affairs.
  • Upkeep & maintenance of Intercultural Collective suite (Schine 132) in partnership with other IC coordinators.
  • Provide coverage for IC reception desk, 119 Euclid, and 113 Euclid as needed.
  • Represent IC at university-wide opportunities (e.g., admissions events, family weekend, orientation).
  • Work in collaboration with Syracuse University advancement to highlight program success.
  • Attend and participate in meetings, training, and professional development activities.

Administrative
  • Budget management and credit card reconciliation.
  • Student staff hiring, on-boarding and supervision.
  • Participate in formal and informal evaluation processes of student staff.
  • Approve time sheets.
  • Inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Schedule meetings as needed.
  • Manage space reservation requests.
  • Participate in staff development and professional development opportunities as needed.
  • Coordinate as necessary shared processes among the Intercultural Collective (IC).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Kessler Scholars Program.

Engagement with National and Campus Partners
  • Periodically serve as an alternate for the Director of the Kessler Scholars Program in representing the Syracuse University Kessler Scholars Program within the national Kessler Scholars Collaborative including work with professional staff peers at partner institutions to build network and connection opportunities for students.
  • Develops and promotes cross-campus partnerships for programming and student support by establishing close working relationships with key campus partners.
