The College is recruiting instructors to teach the following classes during the 2017/2018 school year and to build a pool of instructors for future part-time assignments. Assignments are on the main Oceanside campus, the San Elijo campus in Cardiff, or online.

Course Description: ASTR 101: Descriptive Astronomy to This introductory course surveys the entire universe while emphasizing the nature and process of physical science. Topics include the Earth-Sun-Moon system and night sky, Newton's laws of motion and gravitation, historical astronomy, electromagnetic radiation, spectroscopy, optics and telescopes, the formation and evolution of stars, planets, nebulae, galaxies, and the universe as a whole, the Big Bang, and astrobiology.

ASTR 101L: multiple sections in person; meets 8/21/2017 to 12/16/2017

Course Description: ASTR 101L: Descriptive Astronomy Laboratory ? This course provides a hands-on introduction to the methods and techniques of observational astronomy and data/error analysis. Emphasis is placed on the collection, presentation, and interpretation of astronomical observations. Students learn to use a planisphere, read star charts, and operate small telescopes. Through indoor activities and by making naked-eye, binocular, and telescopic observations, students explore such topics as seasons, lunar phases, rotation of the Earth, optics, light and spectroscopy, planets, stars, galaxies, and cosmology.

ASTR 120: one section in person; meets 8/21/2017 to 12/16/2017

Course Description: ASTR 120: Life in the Universe ? This introductory course surveys the study for life in the universe from the Big Bang to implications of contact with an extraterrestrial civilization while emphasizing the nature and process of physical science. Topics include the formation and evolution of the universe, origin, evolution, and nature of life on Earth, the definitions of life and habitability, potential in our solar system and beyond, methods of interstellar communication and travel, implications of contact, science vs. pseudoscience, and the status of the search to-date.

Adherence to District policies and procedures is expected.

Desirable Qualifications:
Successful teaching experience at the community college level. Experience facilitating science courses for general education students, i.e. liberal arts and/or non-STEM majors. Experience facilitating interactive learning environments in a general education setting using tools, techniques, methods, and materials supported by astronomy and/or physics education research. Implementation of research-validated curricular materials and techniques designed for use in an interactive learning environment such as those from the Center for Astronomy Education (http://astronomy101.jpl.nasa.gov), e.g. Ranking Tasks and Lecture Tutorials for Introductory Astronomy 3e by Prather et al. (2013, Pearson Addison-Wesley). Participation in one or more professional development workshops by the Center for Astronomy Education (http://astronomy101.jpl.nasa.gov). Specifically for ASTR 101L: Experience facilitating an understanding of the night sky in either formal or informal educational venues, e.g. museums, planetariums, etc. Experience with Dobsonian reflectors, planispheres, and/or finder's charts, all-sky simulator programs such as Stellarium or Starry Night, and familiarity with electronic laboratory exercises and resources such as NAAP and CLEA. Experience teaching with the Canvas course management and delivery system is preferred, experience with other CMS/LMS architectures is notable. Experience teaching general education science courses to general education students (e.g. non-science, non-technical, and/or liberal arts majors). Experience with a course management and delivery system such as Blackboard. Experience utilizing interactive engagement methods in the general education classroom. Demonstrated success in teaching students from historically underrepresented groups, under prepared or nontraditional students, speakers of other languages, and students with learning disabilities. Successful experience with different learning technologies. Strong academic preparation in area of instruction. Ability to communicate effectively both in oral and written discourse. Commitment to the community college objective of providing lower-division instruction for students of diverse abilities, interests, and cultural backgrounds.

About MiraCosta College
