Area Coordinator

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and a world leader in experiential learning. The same commitment to connecting with the world drives our use-inspired research enterprise. The university offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs leading to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Our campuses in Charlotte, N.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and Toronto are regional platforms for undergraduate and graduate learning and collaborative research. Northeastern pursues advanced research in security and materials at the Innovation Campus in Burlington, Massachusetts, and in coastal sustainability at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, Massachusetts.

About the Opportunity:

The Area Coordinator is a 12-month, full-time, master's level, professional staff member in the Department of Housing and Residential Life with responsibility for the effective administration and community development of one or more buildings housing a diverse population of students including direct supervision of a paraprofessional staff. In addition, the Area Coordinator has direct supervisory responsibility for one full-time professional Residence Director. These buildings are served by a paraprofessional staff over whom the Area Coordinator has direct and indirect supervision. The Area Coordinator's primary purpose is to develop and maintain an environment conducive to social and intellectual growth as well as the academic success of resident students. This position's responsibilities include: ongoing student development activities, staff supervision, housing and occupancy administration, student conduct, as well as overall facility and security management.

Responsibilities:
Area Coordinators have offices located in their own buildings. Due to the physical layout of the campus and the residence halls, it is critical that these individuals are able to work autonomously and exercise excellent judgment in their areas of responsibility.

All five Area Coordinators participate in the on-call duty rotation, which consists of being on-call one week every five weeks. The Area Coordinators are often requested to assist other University offices and constituencies to help resolve various concerns. It should also be noted that an Area Coordinator may be called upon to respond to crisis situations and that at various times throughout the year, this position requires the individual to work untraditional hours, including evening and weekends.

Due to the live-in requirements of the Area Coordinator position, it is required that the on-campus apartment provided must be the individual's primary residence and that person must maintain a high visibility within their residential areas of responsibility. Primary residence is defined as being present and sleeping on campus a minimum of 4 out of the 5 weeknights and at least 2 weekends a month.

From time to time, the University will close (usually for inclement weather). Under these circumstances, the institution requires only essential staff to report to work. The Area Coordinators are considered essential staff and are required to work. The Area Coordinator staff will be expected to be available via their departmental cell phones and remain on campus for the duration of the time the University is closed and to respond to issues/concerns on campus. Area Coordinators will receive instructions from the Administrator on Call should essential staff be expected to remain on campus after 5:00pm.

Additionally, due to the nature of the University and the Co-Op system that exists, the residential campus never closes. Summer responsibilities include working with conferences, orientation, summer students and on departmental projects.

Each Area Coordinator is an active participant on several committees within and outside the department. This work, along with the various Departments' initiatives, is vital to the Department of Housing and Residential Life and the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. Each Area Coordinator will serve as a Co-Chair of a departmental committee and will be given one additional committee assignment (i.e. Training & Development, Community Engagement, Selection & Recruitment, Housing Taskforce, and others.)

The Area Coordinator is responsible for implementing protocol to address emergencies/crises/mental health issues including: eating disorders, incidents of self-harm, alcohol and drug use/abuse/overdose, and Title IX prohibited offenses. Due to the live-in requirement of the Area Coordinator, this individual is responsible for their residence hall(s) and any urgent events or crises that appear in the residence halls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While the Area Coordinator is not expected to remain in the building at all times throughout his or her tenure, the live-in requirement allows for prompt, professional responses when these situations arise. Even when not on-call, the AC is expected to respond to major crises (student death, building fire, etc.) once becoming aware of them, provided he or she is on campus at the time of the event.

The Area Coordinators will be subject to a criminal background check.

The Area Coordinator role is a position that can be held for three years. At the discretion of the Director of Residence Life, a 4th year can be considered

Qualifications:
Master's Degree in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration or related field required; 3-5 years' experience as a live-in professional in a residence hall setting; effective supervision, administrative, organization, written and oral communication skills; experience in conflict resolution, mediation, application of student development theory in a residence hall setting; excellent decision making skills. Experience working autonomously and are able to exercise excellent judgment in their areas of responsibility. Experience supervising, working with and addressing needs of a diverse student community. Experience with computer applications is required.
