Description:
The Division of Music in the Meadows School of the Arts, SMU, invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Music, Director of Choral Activities position beginning August 2024. We seek a collaboratively minded faculty member, accomplished as conductor and teacher. The successful candidate will bring imagination and innovation to the choral curriculum through artistry in performance; effective implementation of sound pedagogy; engagement with a diverse representation of choral music and vocal styles, including vernacular and non-Western musics; and an established record as recruiter and mentor to gifted singers and conductors.

The Division of Music is a professional, comprehensive institution devoted to the advancement of performance and scholarship, the preparation of the next generation of music professionals, and service in the artistic life of our community, nation, and world. The faculty of internationally acclaimed artists, scholars, and educators care deeply about their students and work collaboratively to serve the mission of the Division.

Responsibilities:



1. Artistic and administrative oversight of the choral program, including rehearsing and conducting the ensembles in concert and at university functions.

2. Teach undergraduate and graduate choral conducting and literature courses.

3. Sustain a distinguished creative agenda reflecting SMU's requirements for promotion and tenure.

4. Collaborate with music faculty in teaching, performance, and curricular development.

5. Collaborate with the Sacred Music Program to enliven its choral offerings.

6. Recruit through vibrant relationships in the community, including secondary-school choral programs.

7. Recruit and mentor choral teaching assistants.

8. Serve the university via committee work and active participation in the cultural and intellectual life of the institution.



Qualifications:
Minimum (required) qualifications

1. Terminal degree in choral conducting, or a masters degree with significant professional accomplishment.

2. Evidence of collegiate teaching excellence.

3. Experience reflecting an investment in choral singing in religious and liturgical contexts, and in K-12 school choral programs.

4. Evidence of productive collaboration with peers to the broad benefit of the schools vision.

Preferred qualifications

1. Experience as a conductor at state, regional, or national conferences and festivals.

2. Experience teaching high-school or church choirs.

3. Experience teaching graduate choral conducting students.

4. A record of distinguished contributions to the choral profession.
