About Social Media within the division of External Affairs


Northeastern University is looking for an innovative, creative, and driven Social Media Specialist to execute Northeastern's organic social media strategy across all platforms for Northeastern University's New York City campus. Reporting to the Director of Social Media, this role is integral to building upon Northeastern's global brand presence while developing and managing communities relevant to the New York City campus. No higher education experience is needed.


Job Summary


The Social Media Specialist will identify opportunities for ahead-of-the-curve social media moments and execute ideas for graphics, videos, and other styles of content that are native to platforms and connect directly with audiences. The person in this role is responsible for understanding and engaging with Northeastern University's NYC community, preparing and posting organic content, monitoring socials for comments and managing interactions, and helping to develop and maintain a dynamic content calendar.


As a member of the talented, award-winning social media team embedded in the university's global Communications department, the Social Media Specialist will increase engagement across all social platforms and build and manage communities relevant to the New York City campus, while adhering to university-wide best practices and policies that elevate the Northeastern brand globally. The person in this role should be an avid consumer of information on social media platforms and adept at finding patterns, trends, and conversations happening within the Northeastern community and in society at large, with the ability to relate those trends back to the university's social presence and brand goals. This person will generate ideas for and execute campaigns that promote connections, push boundaries while remaining brand consistent, and surprise and delight audiences while moving at the speed of the internet.


As social media operates around the clock, the Social Media Specialist must be responsive, fast, thoughtful, and creative when urgent situations arise. The position is based on the NYC campus and is fully on site, five days a week. Remote or hybrid options are not available. As is the case for every member of the Communications team, after-hours work, including weekends and holidays, is routinely required.


Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities


* Use social media tools such as Sprinklr to optimize content streams and engage target audiences and social influencers

* Create and deliver analytics reports detailing social reach and engagement

* Build and manage online communities relevant to the NYC campus while adhering to university-wide best practices

* Monitor and respond to social media conversations in real time

Qualifications and Accountabilities


* 2-3 years of experience creating content for brands on social media; consumer-focused experience preferred. Higher education experience is not needed

* Strong familiarity with all major and up-and-coming social media platforms, including Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Discord, Bluesky, and emerging platforms

* Ability to shoot and edit video for various social media platforms, such as Meta, TikTok, and emerging platforms

* Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (including Illustrator, Premiere, and Photoshop) and/or other creative tools

* Ability to create visually appealing and on-brand graphics for all social media platforms

* Strong writing skills, with a deep understanding of the nuances of language and strong editorial judgment

* Ability to interact with audiences online, answering questions and facilitating engagement

* Experience with data and the ability to use it to inform decisions

* Demonstrated ability to maintain and increase social media engagement

* Voracious social media consumer with a passion for discovering trends

* Positive, energetic, and adaptable attitude, since social media constantly changes and requires the ability to change with it

* Demonstrated ability to build relationships and partner across an organization effectively

* Excellent communication skills and attention to detail

* Strong work ethic and the ability to multitask at a fast pace

* Sense of humor and authentic voice


Salary Range


$66,345 - $93,713 Annually


With the pay range(s) shown above, the starting salary will depend on several factors, which may include your education, experience, location, knowledge and expertise, and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
