Eastern Washington University and the College of Health Science and Public Health at Eastern Washington University invite applications for a Lecturer position in the Department of Dental Hygiene to begin August 17, 2026. This position will include didactic, lab and clinical teaching.

The Department of Dental Hygiene is housed in a state-of-the-art facility located at Eastern's Spokane Campus in Spokane, WA. The department offers the only Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in the state of Washington.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative and caring faculty and staff committed to belonging, equity, and inclusion of all students regardless of background, and to excellence in serving the community.

Eastern is a regional, comprehensive university where all faculty are expected to demonstrate teaching excellence, professional growth, and service to the university, profession, and the community. The primary teaching area for this position will be public health in the graduate program. An ongoing research program and service to the university, college, and department are also required for tenure-track appointments. Responsibilities in this position include teaching and supervising student internships in community-based organizations.

Additionally, all faculty are expected to actively participate in assessment of student learning and to engage in effective teaching.

Conditions of Employment:
To be considered eligible for appointment into the position, applicants must be available and able to start in the position no later than August 17, 2026.

The selected candidate is expected to be located/based on the Spokane campus.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

All new employees must comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's of Science in Dental Hygiene or related field.
  • Washington State Dental Hygiene licensure with restorative endorsement or Dental (dentist) or ability to obtain licensure by date of appointment (8/17/2026).
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or equivalent. The course must include a hands on portion and must cover CPR for adults, children, and infants, the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), and airway management using a bag-valve-mask.
  • Minimum of two years clinical experience within the past five years (clinical practice or clinical faculty).
  • Experience with technology such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Electronic Health Records (EHR) and learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Experience in course design and curriculum development.
  • Demonstrated high degree of interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and belonging for students of all backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills.
  • Experience in evaluating student learning, manage course activities, consult and mentor students
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that is supportive of the needs including universal access of our students, faculty, staff and the public.
Preferred Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who offer one or more of the following

  • Doctorate or terminal degree in the field.
  • Knowledge of the accreditation process.
  • Experience in restorative dentistry.
  • Experience in teaching hybrid courses.
  • Demonstrate potential for scholarship.

Proposed Job Duties & Responsibilities

100% of the time:

Teaching (Primary Responsibility)

  • Teach undergraduate dental hygiene courses in didactic, laboratory, simulation, and/or clinical settings.
  • Develop and deliver evidence-based, engaging instructional materials using effective teaching practices
  • Evaluate student performance using fair and consistent assessment methods
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, clinical competencies and course outcomes
  • Provide academic advising and mentoring to students
  • Support students in achieving clinical competencies and professional behaviors consistent with program expectations.


Clinical Education

  • Supervise students providing patient in the
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards, OSHA, HIPAA, and clinic safety protocols.
  • Evaluate clinical performance using established competency assessment tools.
  • Provide timely feedback to promote student growth and clinical competence.
  • Assist with quality assurance activities related to clinic operations.


Curriculum and Program Development

  • Collaborate with faculty to maintain curriculum aligned with CODA Accreditation Standards and current professional practice.
  • Contribute to course revisions.


Professional Development

  • Maintain current knowledge of dental hygiene practice, educational methodologies, and emerging technologies.
  • Maintain required professional licensure and certifications.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional organizations.


Service

  • Participate in department committees.
  • Assist with program recruitment, admissions, orientation and student success.
