Visiting Teaching Professor of Theatre: Costume Design
The Department of Theatre at Northeastern University-NYC seeks applications for a Visiting Teaching Professor of Theatre: Costume Design to begin August 17, 2026. The department seeks a theatre educator with professional experience who is prepared to teach all levels of Costume Design and Construction, as well as courses in costume history and/or fashion studies. Candidates must have experience mentoring student designers for mainstage and studio productions. This position is a full-time one-year appointment with a 3/3 teaching load (fall and spring semesters) located at our NYC campus.
This is a fixed-term, non-tenure track appointment. Northeastern University will not provide H-1B, TN, O-1, E-3, or any other type of employment visa sponsorship for the successful applicant to this position, now or in the future. The successful applicant must be able to maintain valid work authorization in the United States throughout the entire appointment without Northeastern University's sponsorship for a visa.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD or MFA in Theatre or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Professional design experience and commitment to bringing the most current techniques and practices into the classroom.
- Skills including rendering and sketching, basic costume construction, draping, dyeing, and other costume crafts. Experience with using and teaching digital rendering techniques.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the Theatre faculty to advance the department's pledge to develop and implement recruitment strategies, curriculum, pedagogy, and theatre production practices that are equitable and inclusive.
- Full-time or part-time teaching experience at the college level.
- Strong organizational and collaborative skills.
- A commitment to pre-professional theatre training in the context of higher education.
Responsibilities:
- Teach all levels of costume design and construction courses as well as courses in costume history and/or fashion studies.
- Serve as the ongoing costume advisor and resource for all NYC-based Theatre department productions that occur both on- and off-campus, and mentor Costume Design students works on those productions.
- Work with the Costume Shop Supervisor to coordinate New York costume shop operations and staffing.
- Collaborate with other Theatre faculty and department leadership to coordinate the Costume Program.
- Recruit and evaluate students for the costume concentration of the program.
- Consult on the selection of guest costume designers for department productions.
Salary range: $76,000-$78,000
