Position Description
Incumbents in this position participate in activities relating to government and regulatory requirements and compliance. Coordinate the accumulation of regulatory compliance and technical information for submission to various local and state governmental regulatory agencies and interprets and clarifies federal, state or local laws or regulations. Establishes and maintains policies and procedures to ensure compliance with government regulations.

About the Department and/or College
Major/Essential Functions
Be responsible for project management duties in monitoring asbestos abatement projects to document the standards designed to protect personnel and building occupants from airborne asbestos fibers, determine the adequacy of control measures, observe that contractual requirements are met by the abatement contractor, and consult with contractors and/or consultants on the selection and use of appropriate personal protective equipment and the designed standards of operations.
Be able to perform asbestos inspections of campus buildings through the review of previous inspections and/or surveys, identify and assess condition of suspect asbestos containing materials in the building, determine the sampling scheme of the materials identified to ensure variability in sample site location, adequate sample number, identification of samples collected and documented sample location.
Be able to perform air monitoring services for asbestos abatement projects by obtaining baseline, area, personal, and clearance air samples. Be proficient in the use of calibration devices required for the collection of airborne asbestos fibers with high and low flow air sampling pumps. Collect adequate air samples by appropriate sampling procedures in the number location and frequency necessary to reflect airborne levels of fibers in an impartial, unbiased manner and report results accurately.
Prepare different types of written reports including asbestos building surveys/reports, asbestos abatement reports, safety deficiencies, and compliance audit reviews. Reports shall be a compilation of visual, written or oral observations and assessments at work locations including photographic documentation, interpretation of laboratory reports, regulatory review, correlation with engineering specifications and client project descriptions.
Be able to safely and properly use university equipment including but not limited to proper operation and maintenance of vehicles, hand and power tools, ladders, and other equipment as needed to complete assigned tasks. Properly use and maintain personal protective equipment including but not limited to respiratory protection, safety eyewear, protective footwear, protective clothing, head protection/hard hats and hand protection.
Review current federal, state and local government regulations and advise the university accordingly. With the knowledge of such regulations, provide and/or assist in the face-to-face training of university personnel of asbestos awareness in a classroom setting and provide regulatory information to architects, engineers, project managers, superintendents and others throughout the course of projects as needed.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field or high school diploma and four years experience in a related field in lieu of bachelors. Related certification, licenses and registrations may be required in some areas.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in asbestos removal projects. Experience in the collection and analysis of airborne asbestos fibers and the collection of bulk samples.
Preferred education is a bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, or a physical or natural science from an accredited college or university combined with two years of work experience in an environmental field or in occupational health. Other degree fields are acceptable for consideration with two years of work experience in occupational health or a related field.
Must have ability to read and write proficiently in English. Must be able to maintain proficiency in the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Proficiency Analytical Testing (PAT) program. Currently licensed as an Asbestos Individual Consultant, Asbestos Project Manager, Asbestos Building Inspector, and/or Asbestos Air Monitoring Technician.
Pay Range
$28.37 - $37.07 - $45.63
