Job Overview
The Processing Archivist of the Alexis Carrel Collection is a part time (20/hr. a week) term position that will be located in the Booth Family Center for Special Collections at Georgetown University. The eight-month hire will report directly to the Head of Archival Processing located in the Booth Family Center. The position is donor funded and whose purpose is to arrange and describe the papers of biologist Alexis Carrel. A donation of money was given to the library to ensure that the collection is accessible and visible to researchers.
The project consists of approximately 60 cubic feet of materials that document the career of the Nobel Laureate Alexis Carrel. The collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, laboratory notebooks, photographs, and other materials. Portions of the collection have been partially processed by previous archivists. The Processing Archivist will describe and preserve the collection in accordance with professional best practices and institutional guidelines. In addition, the term employee will craft an online and searchable archival finding aid for the Carrel Collection.
In addition to processing the Carrel Collection, the Processing Archivist will contribute to the department's reference and research services. The archivist will support the promotion of the collection through research, exhibition work, blog posts, and social media.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Arrange and rehouse collection materials following archival best practices
- Import existing inventories and metadata into the department's collection management platform
- Create an archival finding aid using the tool--ArchivesSpace
Work Interactions
The Processing Archivist of the Alexis Carrel Collection reports to the Head of Archival Processing within the Booth Family Center. The term employee will collaborate closely with the archivists, librarians, curators, and staff of the Booth Family Center for Special Collections to support its reference services. The position has direct, regular contact with Library staff, as well as direct (in person) and indirect (via email, phone, chat) contact with researchers on a regular basis. Consults with the Library's Metadata Services unit on cataloging questions and metadata standards.
Requirements and Qualifications
- An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Science and/or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline with archival management and special collections training, or equivalent education and experience.
- One or more years of professional experience in an archival setting.
- Experience preparing DACS-compliant finding aids in an archival content management system, such as ArchivesSpace, Archivist Toolkit, or Archon.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of basic preservation interventions for manuscript materials.
- Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others in a dynamic team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with manuscript collections.
- Experience staffing a special collections service point.

Salary Range
The anticipated hiring compensation for this position is $25.40 to $30.41/hr.

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$21.16 - $35.29
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
