The Prisons and Justice Initiative at Georgetown University invites applications for a full-time non-tenure line Assistant Teaching Professor with administrative leadership responsibilities as Assistant or Associate Director (depending on experience) of the Bachelor of Liberal Arts program. The position will begin January 2026.
Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree program at Patuxent Institution in Jessup, MD. The position will also serve as Assistant/Associate Director of the BLA program for the Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI) in downtown Washington, DC.
The teaching load is 4 courses annually, with teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate level and courses to be taught in their disciplinary expertise as well as core courses as applicable for the BLA Program. The Assistant/Associate Director of the Bachelor of Liberal Arts at Patuxent Institution is responsible for assisting with all aspects of program administration, including semester planning and scheduling, faculty recruitment, training and supervision, and hiring and preparing TAs and other student workers within the BLA. The AD will support the Director of the BLA in collaborating with faculty and students across multiple disciplines, and in engaging with a broad range of stakeholders, including incarcerated students, correctional staff and administrators, and departmental administrators and faculty across the College. The AD will serve as the primary administrative point of contact on matters related to academic affairs. We are looking for candidates who have experience in prison education, pedagogic innovation, academic program building, and student-oriented missions.
The initial term is one year, and the position is renewable.
Qualifications:
1. A PhD with at least 3 years of university teaching experience in the social sciences, natural sciences, and/or humanities is required.
2. Applicants should have:
a. Demonstrated excellence in teaching and student-facing skills;
b. Demonstrated excellence in university administration;
c. Enthusiasm for and experience with working with other disciplines and contributing to the university's intellectual life;
d. Experience and interest in program building and coordination;
e. Strong interpersonal and writing skills;
f. Commitment to working with marginalized student populations, and to social and racial justice.
3. Applicants should be:
a. Comfortable working in a collaborative team environment;
b. Able to effectively time manage work on multiple projects;
c. Capable of interacting patiently and diplomatically with a wide range of constituencies and stakeholders.
Applicants should preferably have:
4. Experience supervising and leading teams;
5. Experience in prison education and in building relationships between universities and prisons;
6. Experience securing funding for academic programs and activities.

The projected salary range for this position is $64,000-68,000. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
