Job Description:
Position Purpose:
The Research Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide medical support to research studies. The primary functions of this position are to evaluate participants for research study eligibility, oversee adverse event reports, perform collection and processing of biological samples, and conduct support activities related to these duties. The Research NP will review medical histories with research participants, perform a physical examination to determine eligibility for research participation, and administer questionnaires. The Research NP will review health updates and adverse event reports from study participants, determine the relatedness of those events to the research, and take and recommend steps to mitigate those events. The Research NP will start and maintain peripheral IV catheters and perform blood sample collection procedures on adult participants enrolled in research studies, some of which involve administration of a drug and/or alcohol. The Research RN will be responsible for processing biological samples, maintaining sample inventory, and preparing samples for transport/shipping. Other research duties are to assist with study protocol implementation, perform data management tasks, and collaborate with other members of the research team.
This is a fixed term position with a current end date of November 1, 2027, which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications and Competencies
Education
- Required: MSN or DNP from an accredited program of nursing. 
- Required: Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Rhode Island.
- Required:  Current and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner Certification from an accredited board of nursing certification (i.e. American Academy of Nurse Practitioners National Certification Board [AANPCB] or American Nurses Credentialing Center [ANCC]). 
- Required:  Current certification as an Adult, Family, Emergency, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.
Experience
- Required:  Current certification in CPR.
- Required:  At least 3 years of nursing experience.
- Preferred: At least 3 years of direct experience with IV insertion, phlebotomy, and related procedures.  Must demonstrate competence in IV/phlebotomy checklist by end of the introductory period or position will be forfeited.
- Preferred: Some experience with blood sample processing is preferred but not required.
- Preferred: Some work or educational experience in a clinical research or laboratory setting is preferred but not required.
- Preferred: Experience in administering EKGs is preferred but not required.

- Understanding of experimental research methodology and clinical research procedures.
- Experience and proficiency with computer applications, including internet, word processing, and data management applications.

Other Information:
- The position requires a skilled individual to work with individuals who experience stigma and/or challenges related to behavioral health issues.  
- Research protocols involve project oversight by the National Institutes of Health and other regulatory agencies (DEA, FDA) and working with controlled substances (e.g., Schedule I drugs). 
- The position will involve exposure to potentially infectious body fluids, including blood products, and must complete Brown-approved safety training regarding these materials.
- NP duties will be scheduled primarily during regular work hours, although specific schedules may vary from week to week.  Occasional availability to work evenings and/or weekends is strongly preferred. 
- A one-year commitment is required. This is a fully onsite position
