ABOUT MPH PROGRAM

The Simmons University Department of Public Health's Master of Public Health program in Health Equity prepares public health professionals to address health inequities by challenging the socio-structural determinants of health that exist within and outside of traditional health domains. The program is fully online and uses a robust set of course delivery tools to support high-level student engagement. It features a low student-to-faculty ratio and live synchronous instruction for professor/student interaction through videoconferencing, complemented by high-quality, asynchronous self-paced online content.

In the Simmons MPH, students learn core public health science and methodological skills, including epidemiology, biostatistics, policy analysis, along with community-based, participatory approaches to study population health challenges. Students also gain the leadership, management, health advocacy, and organizing skills to design, implement, and evaluate programs, policies and campaigns targeted to improve health equity.

JOB SUMMARY

Simmons MPH seeks a Course Designer/Developer for an elective course: GIS and Spatial Analysis. The Course Designer/Developer reports to and will work closely with the Director of the Simmons MPH Program across the course design process. The course learning objectives are determined by the Program's Learning Assessment Framework, with heavy emphasis on health equity and socio-structural determinants of health, and the Course Designer/Developer will be expected to align the course with this and other program criteria.

The Course Designer/Developer is responsible for the curriculum design of the course including all learning outcomes, online content (video lectures, asynchronous activities), assignments and assessments. The Course Designer/Developer should be highly knowledgeable about the subject matter and maintain current expertise in the subject area. Courses are structured and designed to run for 14 weeks.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• The Course Designer/Developer is responsible for the curriculum design of the course including all planning, designing, video recording, and writing (both course content and assessments) for the course. The Course Designer/Developer should be highly knowledgeable about the subject matter for the specific course they are assigned to design. The Course Designer/Developer will create a master course and will be provided content strategy support and templates for syllabus and slides design.
  

• The Course Designer/Developer will work with the Program Director and the Instructional Design Team to develop the course in advance of delivery. The format will be student-centered, media-rich, and objective-driven. As the course is geared for reusability, emphasis is placed on consistency of content, scope and rigor, implementation of best practices, and outcomes-based learning approaches in accordance with the philosophy and objectives of Simmons University. The course will be designed for delivery through Simmons Moodle.
  

• The Course Designer/Developer is an adjunct faculty position. It is expected that approximately 200 hours of faculty time is required to build a 14-week course consisting of about 2 hours of asynchronous and 1.75 hours of synchronous student contact hours per week.
  

• Participate in content revisions as needed through the first time the Course is taught.
  

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• All remaining duties are considered within the context of the ADA, which means that the function could be reassigned to another employee in order to allow a disabled individual to hold the position. Alternatively, the manager could try to provide a reasonable accommodation so that the disabled individual could perform the function.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Teaching experience and evidence of teaching excellence within related course content required.
  
• Graduate degree in public health (MPH or related) required;
  
• Public health practice experience in related content area required.
  
• Demonstrated experience in using GIS software (arcGIS) for public health or related field required
  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• PhD/DrPH or ABD preferred.
  
• Graduate level teaching experience preferred.
  
• Online teaching experience preferred.
  
• Strong knowledge of online instructional design theories preferred.
  

TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS

• Adjunct Faculty are required to provide their own hardware (PC or Mac Computer), software, and internet access to facilitate the courses at Simmons University. Simmons University is not responsible for the purchase, upgrade, or maintenance of instructor's telephone, computer and Internet service. Any required software for courses will be provided at no additional cost to the instructor.
