Position Description
Safely performs journeyperson level tasks in the fabrication, construction, maintenance, alteration and repair of fixtures, equipment, structures, buildings, and built-in components for Texas Tech facilities. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

About the Department and/or College
The Tradesperson performs maintenance, repair, inspection, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance activities on equipment and systems within the Central Heating and Cooling Plant. This position supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant utilities by assisting with maintenance activities, equipment upkeep, documentation, and operational support. The Tradesperson works under established procedures, technical manuals, and supervisory guidance while demonstrating a commitment to safety, continuous learning, and professional development.
Major/Essential Functions
Safety Leadership and Compliance
- Maintain safety as the highest priority for plant personnel, contractors, visitors, and equipment. Participate in safety meetings, inspections, audits, and incident investigations as required. Apply safety training, hazard recognition, and risk mitigation practices to identify and prevent unsafe acts and conditions.
- Comply with all departmental, facility, lockout/tagout, and regulatory safety procedures and requirements. Properly use and maintain assigned Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other safety equipment. Assist in promoting a strong safety culture through coaching, mentoring, and reinforcing safe work practices.
- Assist in the coordination and execution of maintenance activities on plant equipment and systems. Demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn plant systems, maintenance procedures, equipment operation, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks, equipment inspections, housekeeping activities, and basic maintenance assignments under appropriate supervision. Maintain equipment reliability through proper care, cleaning, preservation, and preventative maintenance practices.
- Safely perform maintenance, repair, testing, cleaning, painting, preservation, lubrication, adjustment, and upkeep activities using technical manuals, task sheets, procedures, and manufacturer specifications.
- Perform minor repairs, equipment adjustments, testing, and parts replacement as prescribed by technical documentation, maintenance procedures, and approved parts allowances.
- Troubleshoot equipment and systems that are not operating within established parameters and communicate observed deficiencies to appropriate personnel. Utilize technical knowledge and sound judgment to make decisions regarding equipment condition and operational safety while seeking supervisory guidance when appropriate.
- Accurately complete assigned work orders and maintenance documentation.
- Enter equipment discrepancies, deficiencies, and maintenance findings into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) or other maintenance management systems.
- Perform basic administrative and recordkeeping functions, including entering time, labor comments, and maintenance notes into the maintenance management system.
- Prepare, install, verify, and document Equipment Out-of-Service tags and associated records.
- Assist with the development, revision, and maintenance of plant operating procedures, maintenance procedures, and technical documentation.
- Provide timely and accurate communication regarding equipment conditions, maintenance status, and operational concerns.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment throughout the plant.
- Perform housekeeping duties in mechanical rooms, maintenance areas, equipment spaces, and other assigned locations.
- Ensure work areas are restored to safe and orderly conditions upon completion of maintenance activities.
- Support plant preservation and asset care initiatives through proper cleaning, painting, and upkeep of facilities and equipment.
Required Qualifications
Proficiency in written and mathematical skills as may be reected in the completion of high school or equivalent.
This position requires eligibility to drive TTU vehicles, including a valid U.S. driver license and two years of driving experience.
