Men's Assistant Club Hockey Coach

About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Coach position supports the Men's Club Ice Hockey program within the Department of Recreational Sports at Northeastern University, reporting to the Associate Director of Club Sports and Head Coach Pat Hanlon. This role is responsible for developing participant sport skills, supervising games and practices, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all club participants. The Assistant Coach works closely with club officers and student leaders to establish team goals while upholding all University and Club Sport rules, regulations, and sportsmanship standards. This position requires evening and weekend availability, including travel to off-campus matches and events.

This position is paid with a yearly stipend of $3,000.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Develop and improve participant sport skills, creating drills and running practices with emphasis on player development for both skaters and goalies
  • Attend and supervise a majority of games and practices, including evenings and weekends; approximately 1-3 games per weekend and 2 night practices per week
  • Communicate with the Associate Director of Club Sports on issues related to the club, including travel, injuries, equipment, and administrative tasks; submit weekly timesheets and promote good sportsmanship on and off the ice
  • Ensure safety of all participants, monitor environmental conditions of playing surfaces, and ensure Injury Reports are completed and submitted to the Assistant Director of Club Sports within 24 hours of each incident
  • Collaborate with club officers to establish and achieve team goals, support student leaders, and allow students to take on as much administrative responsibility as possible
  • Adhere to travel guidelines set forth by the Department of Transportation and Parking and the Department of Recreational Sports when accompanying the club to off-campus matches and events
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned to meet the goals and mission of the University, Recreation, and the Club Sport Program


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prior coaching experience at the varsity high school level or higher preferred
  • Previous experience playing at a competitive level, including collegiate or professional, preferred
  • Preferred knowledge of USA Hockey and ACHA rules and regulations
  • Strong communication, accountability, adaptability, and organizational skills
  • High-level knowledge of the game with the ability to create drills and run practices effectively, including skill development for both skaters and goalies
  • Ability to work collaboratively with team captains and e-board to maintain team vision and achieve goals
  • Ability to maintain a fun yet competitive environment
  • Must be available for evening practices, home and away games, and off-campus travel
