Pasadena City College is hiring a Full-Time, Tenure-Track Noncredit English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor commencing with the 2026-2027 academic year.

The successful candidate will provide high-quality, equity-minded instruction to a diverse adult learner population and contribute to the development of innovative noncredit ESL pathways that support student transition to credit programs, workforce opportunities, further education, and lifelong learning.

This position requires a strong commitment to culturally responsive teaching, collaboration across disciplines and community partners, and active participation in institutional initiatives that promote student access, retention, persistence, and completion.




RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE NONCREDIT ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) INSTRUCTOR:
  • Teach noncredit ESL courses across multiple proficiency levels, including literacy through advanced, in a variety of instructional modalities (in-person, online, hybrid, and off-site locations)
  • Plan, organize, and deliver instruction aligned with Course Outlines of Record (CORs) and Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
  • Evaluate student performance using appropriate assessment tools and provide timely, constructive feedback
  • Maintain accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, progress, and outcomes; submit required documentation in a timely manner
  • Develop, review, revise, and assess curriculum, including CORs, certificates of completion/competency, and SLOs
  • Participate in the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of noncredit ESL pathways that support transitions to credit programs, career advancement, and further education
  • Integrate innovative instructional strategies and technology to support diverse and nontraditional learners
  • Collaborate with faculty, counselors, administrators, staff, and community partners to enhance instruction, student support services and program effectiveness
  • Engage in shared governance, committee work, program review, and institutional planning
  • Participate in professional development to remain current in ESL curriculum and pedagogy/andragogy, noncredit education, and emerging instructional practices

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition theory and effective ESL instructional methodologies
  • Ability to teach adult students at varying levels of English proficiency, including non-literate and beginning learners
  • Ability to develop, assess, and revise curriculum aligned with student learning outcomes and program goals
  • Skill in integrating instructional technology and digital tools to enhance teaching and learning
  • Ability to analyze and apply student performance data to improve instruction.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and community stakeholders

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A bachelor's degree in teaching English as a second language, or teaching English to speakers of other languages
OR
  • A bachelor's degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, any foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor
OR
  • A bachelor's degree with any of the majors specified in subparagraph (2) above; and one year of experience teaching ESL in an accredited institution; and a certificate in teaching English as a second language, which may be completed concurrently during the first two years of employment as a noncredit instructor
OR
  • Possession of a full-time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in ESL
OR

  • The equivalent - degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis
  • Strong commitment to the continued innovation and improvement of teaching
  • Experience teaching noncredit ESL in a community college or adult education setting.
  • Experience teaching across modalities, including online, hybrid, and off-site locations.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in curriculum development and outcomes assessment (CORs, SLOs, certificates).
  • Experience integrating instructional technology into ESL instruction.
  • Evidence of supporting promoting student success outcomes (retention, persistence, completion).
  • Experience supporting transitions from noncredit to credit programs or workforce pathways.
  • Experience with project-based, experiential, or community engaged learning.
  • Fluency in more than one language or experience learning another language, especially as an adult.
  • Demonstrated leadership or participation in program development or institutional initiatives.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.





THE ASSIGNMENT:

Ten Months, 100% - Tenure-track position beginning August, 2026.

Thirty-four (34) hours per week consisting of a combination of in-class teaching and preparation for teaching; five and one half (5.5) hours of additional time for student conferences; and five and one half (5.5) hours for professional growth and development, College governance and other professional responsibilities. The College has two 16-week semesters and offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours. Faculty may be offered the opportunity to teach classes during winter and summer intersessions.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Successful completion of live scan clearance and TB screening.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per government codes 3100-3109.
  • Meeting applicable eligibility requirements under CalPERS or CalSTRS if you are a current or former member.
  • Board of Trustees approval.
