Position Description
Performs complex safety and health program work. Work involves implementing safety policies and procedures, supporting the safety training and education of staff, inspecting work areas and activities for hazards, and investigating accidents. Works under direct supervision with qualified latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

About the Department and/or College


Major/Essential Functions
  • Assist and advise Departmental faculty and staff on safety issues and on ways to improve safety conditions.
  • Supervise and coordinate safety efforts within teaching and research labs. Check to determine that all research and teaching labs follow appropriate safety protocols.
  • Be physically present at all scheduled Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) inspections. Work with EH&S during Department safety inspections.
  • Aid EH&S during Departmental environmental clean up.
  • Assist EH&S during waste collection and pick up.
  • Regularly walk through research and teaching labs to promote safe conditions and ensure that the labs are following national, state, and university regulations.
  • Communicate to the Department any changes in national, state, and university regulations that are pertinent with regard to safety and safety management. Partner with all stakeholders in the safety education and training of the personnel as appropriate.
  • Serve as a member of the Department Safety Committee.
  • Actively engage in continual professional development on safety matters.


Required Qualifications
Graduation from high school with four years of work experience or an associate degree in a STEM field. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and perform basic math. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate ideas clearly and concisely.

Preferred Qualifications
Completion of a certified 40 hour HAZWOPER course.

Pay Range
$23.08 - $30.63 - $37.69
