Job Overview
Laboratory Safety Technician, Environmental Health & Safety - Laboratory Safety - Georgetown University:
The Laboratory Safety Technician supports the University's mission to maintain a safe, compliant, and efficient laboratory environment. This role focuses on coordination of biological waste, oversight of safety-related administrative systems, maintaining safety infrastructure, and providing direct support for safety compliance activities. The incumbent ensures that laboratories meet internal and regulatory safety standards, that various laboratory safety equipment is available and properly managed, and that safety reminders and certifications are tracked and communicated in a timely manner.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Coordinate biowaste pickups, consolidate and package waste, maintain chain-of-custody records, audit waste streams, and work with vendors.
- Maintain and update EHSA safety database, add PIs and lab workers, track permits, training, and certifications, and support audits.
- Conduct decontamination reviews for labs and equipment, issue green tags, document results, and train staff.
- Schedule and perform safety shower and eyewash testing, log results, identify deficiencies, and coordinate repairs.
- Ensure labs have accurate hazard signage, emergency contacts, PPE postings, and evacuation maps; inspect and update regularly.
- Track Biological Safety Cabinet certifications, send reminders, coordinate certifiers, and maintain records.
- Prepare and distribute safety newsletters, bulletins, reminders, and quick training aids.
- Work with Facilities, Procurement, EH&S, lab managers, and PI offices to resolve safety issues, plant shutdowns, support renovations, and assist with emergency response.

Work Interactions
This position reports directly to the Laboratory Safety Manager within Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and works closely with the EH&S staff. The Laboratory Safety Technician has no direct reports but may direct the work of contractors or temporary personnel performing waste pickup, safety equipment testing, or equipment certifications.
The work performed by this position is essential to ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations as well as University policies that protect laboratory workers, students, and the surrounding community. The Laboratory Safety Technician provides frontline support for EH&S by coordinating biological waste management, maintaining safety systems (EHSA), and facilitating safety communication across campus. This role supports Georgetown University's mission of academic excellence and research innovation by reducing laboratory hazards, enabling safe research operations, and fostering a culture of safety throughout the University's research enterprise.
Requirements and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience requirements: 0-1 year with a degree, or 1-3 years without
- Strong organizational skills; ability to track multiple compliance tasks and deadlines.
- Attention to detail, especially for record-keeping, certifications, and safety documentation.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to interact with Principal Investigators, lab staff, service providers, and regulatory personnel.
- Basic technical skills: ability to work with safety database systems or other administrative software; ability to perform routine testing of safety showers / eyewashes, etc.
Preferred requirements and qualifications
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, environmental science or related field.
- Experience working in higher education is a plus
- General Laboratory experience and OSHA Laboratory safety requirement knowledge

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$20.16 - $31.30
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
