JOB TITLE:
Research Scientist, Asst
JOB PURPOSE:
Research Scientists are academic professionals whose primary responsibilities are to conduct and support research. UW Regulation 2-7 describes the activities that fall into this set of responsibilities for faculty; the same definition of research applies to Academic Professionals.
We are seeking a Research Scientist to support a broad portfolio of ecological and evolutionary research projects in the labs of Drs. Marketa Zimova and Sean Giery. The Research Scientist will contribute to study design, field and laboratory data collection, data management and analysis, and preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant proposals. The position involves active collaboration with faculty, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students, and external collaborators.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with PIs, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students, and collaborators to plan, implement, monitor, and interpret research studies in ecology and evolution.
- Participate in research method development and project design.
- Collect, organize, and manage data from field studies, laboratory work, and collaborators.
- Conduct statistical analyses.
- Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, presentations, reports, grant proposals, research permits, and other materials.
- Help train and supervise graduate and undergraduate students.
- Oversee daily operations of the PIs' labs and ensure a productive and safe research environment.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop, maintain, and update standard operating procedures and quality control protocols to ensure safety and data integrity.
- Provide instruction to students, staff and external collaborators on safe and effective field and laboratory research practices.
- Maintain inventories of supplies and equipment; coordinate purchasing and maintenance of research equipment and supplies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree in Ecology and Evolution, Wildlife Biology, or a closely related field.
- Experience with field research methods for wildlife ecology, including remote camera trapping, small mammal live trapping, and ultrasonic acoustic monitoring.
- Proficiency in statistical analysis using R, including hierarchical multinomial logistic regression and mixed-effects models.
- Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP.
- Experience driving and safely operating 4WD vehicles and ATVs in remote field settings.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor students and coordinate research activities.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience contributing to or leading the preparation of scientific manuscripts, presentations, and other research products.
- Prior involvement in multi-institutional or highly collaborative research projects.

WORK LOCATION:
On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work on campus.
