Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology encourages applications for an Assistant Director for Research and Faculty Systems! The Assistant Director provides strategic and operational leadership for three critical program areas within the Office of Information Technology (OIT): Business Development & Content Services, Faculty Information Systems (FIS), and IT Program Management for the Electronic Research Administration (eRA). This position leads a team of technical experts and program managers responsible for delivering enterprise solutions that support campus-wide administrative, research, and academic functions.
The Assistant Director collaborates closely with key partners across campus, including academic leadership, administrative units, research offices, and external technology vendors to ensure high-quality, secure, and sustainable IT services. They are responsible for aligning programmatic goals with the university's strategic objectives and for fostering innovation, operational excellence, and user-focused service delivery. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Strategic Leadership & Planning:
  • Develop and drive the strategic vision for the Research and Faculty Systems portfolio in alignment with university priorities and OIT objectives.
  • Lead long-term planning efforts for enterprise content systems, faculty data platforms, and research IT services including finding alignments and reducing duplication.
  • Represent Research and Faculty Systems in governance bodies, cross-campus committees, and central initiative planning sessions.
  • Engage regularly with campus partners in building and maintaining strong partnerships to understand their concerns so as to advise improvements and ensure programs remain responsive to campus needs
  • Act as strategic liaison between program areas and key customers to ensure solutions meet business needs and campus expectations.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend enterprise solutions that support continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Ensures programs continue to meet evolving campus and customer needs, aligning with CU Boulder's commitment to excellence and accessibility.
Program Oversight:
  • Provide high-level oversight for the operational effectiveness and performance of three program areas:
    • Business Development & Content Services. Assists university departments streamline operations by securely storing, organizing, and automating document workflows (e.g., OnBase, DocuSign, digital workflow platforms).
    • Faculty Information Systems (FIS). Supplemental data system used to supervise faculty personnel information, including appointments, reviews and promotions, sabbatical eligibility, faculty professional and outreach activities, scholarly and creative work interests, and other faculty data including research and publication data and ORCID iDs. (e.g., faculty lifecycle information, reporting, training for support staff, and capturing, organizing, and reporting faculty accomplishments).
    • IT Program Management for Electronic Research Administration (eRA). Supports technology solutions that serve as the official repository for sponsored project proposals and awards and allow faculty, research staff, and central research administrative offices to complete their work in an effective and efficient manner by reducing the administrative burden and continue to adhere to regulatory compliance and perform outstanding research. (e.g., research administration systems, service improvement, project oversight).
  • Ensure the successful delivery of enterprise applications and services through structured project management, business analysis, and service lifecycle management.
  • Supervise budget planning, resource allocation, and service agreements for supported programs and systems.
  • Evaluates the ongoing value, effectiveness, and alignment of services with established objectives, business needs, and budget constraints.
  • Ensure business continuity through robust planning and budget management (if applicable), including maintaining service continuity plans to support critical operations during disruptions.
  • Ensures programs are in compliance with OIT's ITIL practices, enterprise architecture and standards, and standards for information security and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accessibility.
Service Oversight for Faculty Information Systems:
  • Supervise the successful transition of the Faculty Information System from its current on-prem developed solution to an enterprise SaaS solution.
  • Provide both technical and strategic direction to the project team throughout the transition.
  • Act as strategic and operational liaison between the Office of Faculty Affairs, Human Resources, University Information Services (UIS) and OIT.
  • Serve as main liaison between vendor(s) and the University.
Staff Supervision:
  • Directly supervise program managers; provide coaching, mentorship, and professional development support.
  • Cultivate a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture across the Research and Faculty Systems team.
  • Ensure staff have the resources, training, and support to meet service objectives.
Resource Management:
  • Support the evaluation and procurement of software tools, platforms, and external service providers based on cost-effectiveness, performance, and alignment with university needs.
  • This position partners with OIT Finance, Planning and Procurement (FPP) to establish an appropriate budget, based on program objectives and key results, and effectively manage to it. This includes anticipating and estimating revenue and expenditures, reviewing monthly budget statements and interdepartmental invoicing, and making modifications to the budget when needed during mid-cycle budget adjustment processes.

What We Can Offer

  • The salary range is $147,300 to $155,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Equivalent experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • At least 5 years of dynamically responsible IT experience, including 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising enterprise-level IT services, applications, or platforms in a complex organization.
