Requirements
The Office of Academic Services is looking for collaborative colleagues to join the academic support team as Writing Specialists, supporting Georgetown University in Qatar's (GU-Q's) diverse and ambitious undergraduate learners.
The Office of Academic Services (OAS) is a dynamic academic support unit that provides a variety of programs and services to enhance learning for all students at GU-Q. OAS is currently seeking two part-time Writing Specialists who will support the development of students' academic writing skills.
These are temporary, part-time positions with a schedule of 29 to 40 hours per week through the fall semester, with an expected start date in August 2025.
As these positions are based in Doha, Qatar, and offer no relocation assistance, GU-Q is seeking locally based candidates only. This are non-sponsored positions that require all applicants to already have the necessary sponsorship to live and work in Qatar.
Key Accountabilities
- Foster the development of students' academic writing skills by providing expert tutoring.
- Assist select WRIT faculty in providing class-related support.
- Identify and/or develop resources and other forms of supplemental support for students' academic writing.
- Assist with administrative and operational tasks and projects to maintain and continuously improve the high quality of writing center services.
Key Activities
- Support select WRIT courses by attending classes, conducting weekly labs, holding office hours, and liaising with faculty.
- Provide individual tutoring to students working on documents at various stages of the writing process.
- Locate and/or create support materials such as citation guides, handouts, videos, and presentations for use in tutoring sessions, workshops, and online.
- Facilitate presentations or workshops on behalf of the center.
- Assist the coordinator with regular operations such as scheduling and advertising, as well as special projects.
- Contribute to the strategic planning of the center to support student success.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a field with an emphasis on academic writing required. Priority will be given to GU-Q alumni.
- A Master's degree in Composition, Rhetoric, Communication Studies, Education, TESOL, or a related field with an emphasis on writing is an asset.
- Excellent research, writing, editing, and citation skills.
- Experience providing academic assistance in study skills and effective learning strategies.
- Experience with tutoring or teaching small groups preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to lead small groups or teams.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively.
- Knowledge of writing pedagogy.
- Familiarity with the conventions of academic writing.
- Awareness of common standards for academic integrity.
- Familiarity with GU-Q curriculum and writing requirements preferred.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and learning management system (LMS) platforms.
