The Georgetown - Howard Center for Medical Humanities and Health Justice (MHHJ) is pleased to announce the call for proposals for its 2025-2026 Community Fellowship. This fellowship is an opportunity for residents of the Washington, DC Metropolitan area (District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, Montgomery County, and Prince George's County) dedicated to advancing health justice in their communities. This fellowship provides a platform for community changemakers and cultural trailblazers including, but not limited to, religious and spiritual leaders, teachers, storytellers, journalists, organizers, creatives, artists, and healthcare professionals, to develop and implement projects that promote community-engaged approaches to understanding and tackling health disparities through the medical humanities. The MHHJ Community Fellowship is designed to foster collaboration among community members, scholars, artists, and health professionals, creating a vibrant network dedicated to using arts and humanities approaches to address health disparities and promoting well-being within diverse communities. Each year, the fellowship focuses on a specific theme; this year's theme is "Networks."

Fellowship Expectations

Fellows are expected to produce at least one research or creative output, such as the following:

Oral histories
Digital materials and databases
Expressive and creative projects
Published peer commentaries
Public and engaged scholarship: i.e. documentary film, podcast, digital platforms, museum and artistic exhibits
Peer-reviewed articles
Archival projects

Fellows must organize at least one public-facing workshop, or similar event.

Fellows may apply for additional funding with MHHJ (if the event meets the Center's annual objectives) or third party sources to support this public-facing event.

Funding Details

Maximum Award Amount: $45,000
Period of Performance: up to 12 months
Funding Conditions:
- Funding cannot be deferred
- Funding will be paid directly to the awardee

Funding Restrictions

Fellowship funding cannot be used for the following:

Preparing or revising of textbooks
Developing curriculum
Writing of books for children or young adults
Inventorying of collections
Writing a guidebooks, how-to books, and self-help books
Pursuing projects that fall outside of the humanities or the humanistic social sciences

Qualifications

To be eligible for this fellowship, the candidate must:

Reside in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and be available to participate in MHHJ programming;
Work or have experience in fields related to health, humanities, or the arts.

Selection Criteria

Applicants will be evaluated based on:

Relevance of the application to the Center's designated research theme.
Overall significance of the project to the Washington, DC, metropolitan area.
Feasibility of engagement and education plans.
Likelihood of deriving satisfactory results during the fellowship period.
Collaboration opportunities with other Center Fellows and community advocates.

Application Instructions

Step 1: Notice of Intent (due October 4, 2024)

Resume (max 2 pages)
Notice of Intent form including:
- The issue addressed by the project
- Overview of methods and activities
- Expected outcomes

Step 2: Full Application (by invitation, due November 1, 2024)

Two referees' names and emails (letters requested for finalists only)
Cover letter (max 1 page) detailing interest, qualifications, and project relation to MHHJ and the annual theme
Portfolio with at least 2 past projects or endeavors
Project summary (max 4 pages) outlining:

Public engagement and education facets.
Project location and impacted community.
Project goals and means to achieve them.
Relevant personal, professional, and academic skills and experiences.
Expected benefits from working with MHHJ.
Importance of the project to the applicant and the community.
Addressed health injustice and applied methods to tackle it.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Fellowships cannot be deferred.
Notice of Award

Successful applicants will receive a formal Notice of Award from MHHJ via email by November 22, 2024. This notice will detail the fellowship terms, including:
- Start date
- Duration
- Stipend amount
- Fellowship expectations
To accept the award, fellows must complete the necessary paperwork by December 13, 2024.
- After acceptance, fellows will receive information on orientation, initial meetings, and access to MHHJ resources.
- Fellows are encouraged to begin planning their research, public engagement activities, and any courses they will be teaching.
The award is contingent on adherence to the specified terms and successful completion of pre-fellowship requirements.
- Non-compliance may result in revocation of the fellowship.

Acknowledgement Requirement

Fellows are expected to acknowledge MHHJ in materials publicizing or products resulting publications resulting from MHHJ support.

The projected salary pay range for this position is listed above, which represents the full range of anticipated compensation for this position. Compensation is determined by a number of factors, including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors
