Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Opportunity

Job Summary:

Professor Hongli Zhu, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University has an immediate opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research in materials and devices (polymer, ceramic, lithium metal, solid state energy storage). Responsibilities include performing basic or applied research of a limited scope, primarily using existing theories and methods. Assisting the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results.

Maintaining the laboratory and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. Primary responsibility is ensuring that the research is complete.

Qualifications:

Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. Successful candidate is enthusiastic, and self motivated from diverse backgrounds and disciplines; including electrochemical engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, polymer engineering or related fields. Experiences and skills in ceramic, electrochemistry, polymer and solid state battery are encouraged.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing synthetic approaches for preparing solid-state electrolytes for Li batteries and other advanced battery systems

  • Performing structural and electrochemical characterization of electrode materials

  • Studying the degradation mechanisms of battery electrodes

  • Disseminating research findings with high-quality scientific papers and presentations

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Self-motivated and a self-starter with hands-on skills and abilities a must. Team-oriented attitude required

    Position Requirements:

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, or closely related fields

  • A strong background in synthesis, materials characterization, and electrochemistry

  • Ability to work collaboratively with group members and internal/external colleagues

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills are a must.

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skills at solid state electrolyte materials synthesis and characterization

  • Flow batteries

  • Experience in cell technology development, manufacturing batteries, building and testing prototype battery samples.
