Job Summary
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder has an immediate opening for a Scientific Programmer to support NOAA's Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) work with greenhouse gas measurements and models. The modeling team within GML is responsible for supporting NOAA's analysis of greenhouse gas measurements by creating simulations of trace gas distributions in the atmosphere.
The selected candidate will develop software to facilitate the routine operation of atmospheric trace gas models as a member of the GML team. They also will analyze measurements and model data with the goal of evaluating and improving atmospheric simulations of greenhouse gases. These modeling projects support U.S. and international greenhouse gas mitigation efforts.
Applicants for this position must possess excellent software development skills and a demonstrated background in scientific data analysis. Applicants should also possess strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a team toward common goals. This position is located in the Carbon Cycle Greenhouse Gases division of the Global Monitoring Laboratory at the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO. This position can accommodate a hybrid work modality.

The Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operates long-term observing systems of atmospheric carbon, water vapor, ozone, ozone-depleting substances, aerosols, radiation and clouds, and develops new observing, analytical and modeling capabilities to enable a process understanding of past and future changes.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- The development of utilities to generate model input files and post-process model output (25% time)
- Data analysis (25% time)
- Model development to support atmospheric simulations of greenhouse gases including coding using parallel processing (25% time)
- A variety of numerical modeling and analysis projects in Fortran, python, and R. (25% time)
What You Should Know
- This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305.
- If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

- CIRES offers a generous and comprehensive compensation package.
- The annual hiring salary range for this position is $75,300 - $122,000.
- Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.
- Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorado's relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, physics, applied math, Earth sciences, or similar technical subject area.
- Proven experience in scientific programming.
- Proven experience developing numerical models.

- Proficiency in Python and or R
- Familiarity with Linux or Unix environments
- Knowledge of shell scripting
- Desire and ability to work in an inclusive and collaborative work environment
