Position Description
Performs specialized Post Doctoral work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research. Responsible for participating in a research project associated with PhD studies and the interpretation of the results of publication. Work is performed under supervision of graduate faculty members with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Advancing radar processing techniques for using high-resolution radar technologies to extract fine-scale wind measurements from the atmospheric boundary layer in support of wind energy, wind engineering, and boundary layer meteorology applications.
  • Contribute to the existing research group.
  • Assist in directing graduate student research, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Utilize/modify radar processing techniques for weather applications.
  • Perform quantitative analysis on large and diverse datasets.
  • Collaborate internally with faculty, colleges, departments.
  • Collaborate externally with other universities, national/federal laboratories, and private industry.
  • Cultivate, write and submit funding opportunities to increase research expenditures for the Institute and University.


Required Qualifications
PhD in area of project specialization Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to plan and allocate the workload of employees, providing direct training and supervision as needed.

Preferred Qualifications
Qualifications in addition to the required qualifications:
Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or Electrical Engineering, a strong background in radar processing techniques for weather applications, familiarity with the wind energy and/or wind engineering communities, the ability to perform quantitative analysis on large and diverse datasets, and strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required: This position requires fundamental knowledge regarding weather radar operations, post-processing and dual-Doppler synthesis techniques, the ability to quantitatively analyze large atmospheric data fields, the ability to assist with research proposal writing activities, and independently publish research in peer-reviewed journals.

Preferred: Knowledge of the wind energy and/or wind engineering research communities, ability to conduct and participate in atmospheric fieldwork, historical experience with digital signal processing and interaction of the radar I/Q data stream, knowledge of weather radar algorithm development.
