DEFINITION

Under general supervision of the area Administrator, conduct a variety of specialized student programs and activities to engage the District's diverse student population, assure effective and efficient program operation, and build alliances for the benefit of students.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The incumbent in this position connects students with personal growth opportunities in Student Life and Leadership by promoting and mentoring student clubs, supporting student learning about diversity, equity and inclusion through programming and related activities and creating other opportunities for student engagement. The Activities Assistant is required to exercise sound judgment in application of standard practices and procedures in organizing and implementing student programming and to maintain a positive image of the District throughout the community.

Incumbents in this position support the overall mission of the district, institutional effectiveness and student learning outcomes by providing programs and activities that promote student involvement to achieve academic and personal success.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assist Student Life and Leadership in planning and implementing programs and services;
  • Provide ongoing program development and support including overseeing the day-to-day operations of the assigned area;
  • Integrate on-going diversity education into programs and activities;
  • Effectively communicate and promote programs and activities to students;
  • Receive and respond to general inquiries and/or refer to appropriate offices;
  • Serve as a resource and co-advisor to Associated Students and lnterClub Council;
  • Mentor students in event planning and implementation skills;
  • Provide supervision at various student-initialed activities (day or evening);
  • Assist with District student orientation programs;
  • Represent Student Life and Leadership at on-campus and off-campus events;
  • Collaborate with clusters and departments, and externally with agencies and educational institutions to create student programs and activities;
  • Gather data and information for reports as required;
  • Train and oversee the work of student workers;
  • Create publicity flyers for programs, events and activities using various publishing programs and monitoring and updating social media pages and department website;
  • Coordinate office coverage and perform office functions (including and not limited to): create and distribute informational materials, receive and organize mail and other documents, maintain office records, files, and operate a variety of equipment;
  • Implement policies and procedures, and provide information regarding departmental and area programs and related activities;
  • Check and review a variety of data and other material for completion and conformity with established regulations, procedures, and departmental college policy; and
  • Perform other related duties as required.



QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Required
  • Associate Degree;


Experience:
Required
  • One year of student development program experience;
  • Related experience beyond the minimum qualifications may be substituted for education;

Preferred
  • Experience organizing special projects and overseeing the work of others;
  • Record keeping and office management experience;
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written).


Knowledge of:
  • College organization, policies, rules, and programs preferred.
  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;
  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and
  • District policies and procedures.


Ability to:
  • Maintain confidentiality of personnel and student leadership matters, records and mainframe information;
  • Initiate and prioritize work as required;
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.


Physical ability to:
  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;
  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;
  • Lift and/or carry 25 pounds; and
  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.
  • Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.

SALARY SCHEDULE
Below is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E. Per Cuesta College's bargaining agreement, new employees are placed at Steps A through C, which is the anticipated hiring range also listed below.   • Salary Schedule Range: $3,700 - $4,497 per month.
  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,700 - $4,079 per month.
