    • 11 days per year (0-5 years)

  • This position receives specific holidays and Board-granted days off with pay as determined by the holiday schedule (see CSEA 8.7.1 (Download PDF reader)). This position also receives sick leave of one day per month of employment.
  • Current position work schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.. Work schedule may vary dependent upon District need and may include work on weekends, holidays and on-call shifts.

OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of an administrator, performs complex skilled and semi-skilled duties requiring significant knowledge of plumbing, water and drainage systems in the inspection, maintenance and repair of campus buildings and facilities; and to perform related duties as required.



Representative Duties:

The duties recorded below are representative of the duties of the class and are not intended to cover all the duties performed by incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Install, maintain, diagnose, rebuild, adjust and/or repair general plumbing, water distribution and drainage systems and repair existing systems in buildings and facilities*
  2. Inspect, install, maintain, and repair various types of boilers, forced air, steam and hot water heating systems and units*
  3. Repair and replace pipes, valve fittings, ball cocks and other fixtures*
  4. Repair water supply, waste sewage and drainage pipes*
  5. Cut and thread pipe, pack faucets, wipe and flush joints, adjust controls; clean out drains and obstructions in water and sewer systems*
  6. Perform preventative maintenance and water conservation utilizing journey-level plumbing practices*
  7. Interpret plumbing plans and specifications, and check for conformity with codes regulations and safety orders*
  8. Perform line work, including routing of drainage to main outlets and running piping through subflooring, interior walls, exterior walls and ceilings as necessary*
  9. Work from plans, sketches, blueprints or other instructions*
  10. Engineer new plumbing systems and installations and prepare estimates of time and material required for new construction and repair*
  11. Inspect work completed by contractors; keep records and prepare reports for work done and material used*
  12. Operates a computer to perform data entry, access email and District announcements, etc.*
  13. Service and otherwise maintain the working order of shop and equipment
  14. Serves on a variety of District committees as requested
  15. May perform other duties as assigned


Qualifications/Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from high school or G.E.D. or the equivalent*; AND
  • Four (4) years of experience directly related to the required functions of this position.
* High School education equivalency equals an adult education diploma or four (4) years of full-time paid work experience.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration and Other Requirements:
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver's license throughout duration of employment with the District.
DIVERSITY QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity and sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Backflow prevention assembly testing certification.
  • Four (4) years of experience at journey level in plumbing.
  • The completion of a formal trade apprenticeship program or an Associate's Degree in plumbing or a related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
May be acquired through education, training and experience.
Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; the policies, procedures, rules and regulations affecting department activities; the materials, tools, equipment and practices used in plumbing and other water line installation and repair of buildings and related equipment; applicable safety methods associated with department equipment and activities; computer usage for data entry, accessing email and District announcements and utilizing software.
Ability to: use, operate, maintain and repair tools and equipment; repair and maintain buildings and related structural facility plumbing issues; work from plans and specifications follow safety rules and regulations; follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work; ability to read and write at the level necessary for successful job performance; perform heavy physical labor; learn and interpret the rules, regulations and policies and procedures of the District and those affecting departmental operations; effectively operate a computer to perform position functions; utilize keyboarding skills commensurate with the required functions for this position; demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to, and the understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.



Supplemental Information:

WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No assigned permanent staff to supervise. May provide work direction to short-term and student employees and outside contractors.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Regular, and at times sustained exertion of heavy physical effort such as bending, stooping, crawling, crouching, pushing, pulling, working in confined spaces, and lifting and carrying moderately heavy items (20-50 lbs) and occasionally very heavy items (100 lbs or more); the operation of vehicles, shop equipment and hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand/eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat or cold, noise from equipment and machinery, strong and/or toxic fumes and chemicals, high pressure gases and liquids, dusts, machinery hazards, electrical currents, working in confined spaces or overhead for extended periods of time.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  1. The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination, based on the physical requirements of the position, prior to employment. The physician will be selected and paid for by the District. Disabilities not related to the essential physical job requirements will not preclude the applicant from being hired.
  2. Education Code 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.
  3. As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints to the local police department. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee's responsibility.
