Senior Director Study Abroad

About the Opportunity

SUMMARY & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Global Experiential Pathways, the Senior Director of Study Abroad provides strategic oversight and direction for the development and management of Study Abroad programs, including traditional study abroad, faculty-led Dialogues of Civilizations, internal transfer, exchange programs, and course-embedded study abroad. It also covers "Study Away" opportunities within the Northeastern Global Network, aligned with the University's goals of student mobility.

Additionally, the Senior Director: ensures that all programs and offerings meet strategic objectives, achieve academic and learning goals, meet student demand, are financially sound, and provide an excellent and safe experience for students, through rigorous review of measurable objectives; provides executive level coaching, training, and development for the leaders within each team; and manages a small team that includes the Director of Study Abroad and the Director of Global Advising and the Associate Director of Mobility/Study Away.

This Boston-based position requires extensive international travel to provide strategic oversight of program sites.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated commitment to international education and the promotion of cross-cultural understanding. Understanding of NAFSA (Association of International Educators), professional ethics and competencies. Familiarity with international political, social, and cultural issues as they pertain to education abroad, international travel, and international service. Knowledge of principles and issues of study abroad advising, including the ability to advise students considering studying abroad. Strong oral and written communication to positively engage people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, administer affirmative action policies effectively, and supervise in a culturally diverse workforce. Strong time management and prioritization skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities at once in a fast-paced environment. Excellent problem-solving and strong analytical skills with proven ability to strategize, prioritize, and multi-task to meet goals and deadlines. Strong interpersonal skills, sufficient to inspire others and work effectively and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and other stakeholders. This includes professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, excellent judgment, discretion, and the ability to make decisions in a timely manner. Ability to interact with global program representatives, faculty, and students in a highly professional manner with an understanding of protocol and confidentiality. Ability to effectively represent the University to outside institutions and universities. Strong organizational, project management, administrative, and computer skills.

Proficiency in Excel and other Microsoft Office software required. Familiarity with Salesforce, Terra Dotta, and student record systems (e.g., Banner) preferred.

Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. Knowledge and skills required for this job are normally acquired through a Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of academic administrative experience, with 4+ years of leadership and staff supervision as well as previously studying abroad at the undergraduate level or time living abroad.
