POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Resident Minister (RM) engages USF students, especially those living in residential communities, to explore principles of Ignatian Spirituality and apply these principles to their life and work. The RM connects students to the USF Jesuit Catholic tradition by engaging students in experiences with University Ministry. By helping them to reflect and inviting them to discern how they can shape and transform their purpose in the world, RMs encourage students to develop relationships of compassion, justice, and advocacy. The RMs also work with campus partners to connect students to valuable campus resources. The RM must be available to students for up to 18 hours (residence hall work hours, work hours in a specific program area, and work in general UM training and signature programs) each week and is expected to attend University Ministry programs, liturgies and events, facilitate hall programs, and be attentive to any student needs that may arise.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Residence Hall Work:
  • Be available to students for conversation, support and reflection informally and during scheduled hours. Up to 8-10 hours of availability a week.
  • Meet regularly with Residence Hall staff at regularly scheduled staff meetings, facilitate reflection, and support staff in community development and programming.
  • Develop programs that use principles of Ignatian spirituality to challenge students to engage, reflect, discern, develop relationships of justice, and live with hope, passion, integrity and purpose.
  • Provide support and reflection opportunities for students connected to living learning, themed and academic program communities.
  • Some Resident Ministers may be assigned to one of several Living Learning Communities: St. Ignatius Institute, Esther Madriz Scholars, or the Erasmus community.

2. University Ministry Program Area:
  • Support University Ministry Program Areas and engage students in University Ministry programs under the direction of the Associate/Assistant Director of that area.
  • Up to 8-10 hours of weekly availability during UM office working hours for program-related work.
  • Some Resident Ministers may be assigned to also assist with Ignatians, a group of UM student leaders.

3. University Ministry Signature Programs and Ongoing RM Formation:
  • Support and attend University Ministry programs as part of the University Ministry team including: the weekly 7:00 pm Sunday student liturgy, opportunities of service, major university liturgies, seasonal liturgies, University Ministry signature events.
  • Attend RM orientation in August, retreats, regularly scheduled meetings, in-services, theological reflection sessions and training opportunities.

PROGRAM AREAS

Liturgy & Music - Resident Ministers in this area assist with the planning and preparation of Sunday night student liturgies, the Mass of the Holy Spirit, major university liturgies, and prayer services. The Liturgy and Music RMs recruit, train, schedule, and build community among student lay ministers and build and maintain a database of students involved with lay ministry. The Liturgy & Music RM should have experience in planning and a passion for the liturgical life of the community at USF. RMs are also expected to train students in various liturgical roles.

Retreats - RMs are responsible for the creation, planning, and organization of multiple day-long, half-day, overnight, and weekend retreat experiences for USF students, faculty, and staff. Retreat team RMs are expected to attend all weekly meetings, train student leaders, lead assigned retreat experiences, and help develop a marketing plan. RMs in this area should have an interest in student development.

Social Justice - RMs in this area help students to step outside of their familiar university lives, walk with people at the margins of society, and in doing so, open their minds and hearts to personal transformation. Social Justice RMs are responsible for leading social justice opportunities, engaging students in reflection and discernment, marketing events, and leading local and national engagement in social justice (Ignatian Solidarity Network, Food Recovery Network, etc.)

Immersions - RMs in this area must proactively recruit, plan, and organizer all pre-immersion, immersion, and post-immersion logistics. Responsibilities include: marketing immersion opportunities, training student leaders, developing and leading reflections, organizing travel paperwork, coordinating with immersion leaders at immersion locations, and providing opportunities for student reflection and discernment. RMs must have a passion for student development and working with national and international communities.

REQUIREMENTS
RMs must be available for a 10-month commitment beginning on August 1, 2019 and ending on May 31, 2020. RMs must be available for a mandatory week-long orientation from August 5 -9, 2019.

ROOM AND BOARD
RMs are classified as volunteers. The position requires that RMs live on campus in the residence halls and, therefore, receive housing accommodations and a flexi meal plan.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field (Preference given to those working toward a Master's degree in theology, ministry or a appropriate field). Ministerial experience with youth, or experience which would effectively transfer to ministry work at a Jesuit Catholic university. Basic pastoral skills and an understanding of faith development and student development. Ability to appropriately share one's experience of faith and to invite students to explore their own sense of faith, spirituality and the promotion of justice.
