Job Summary
The University of Michigan-Dearborn invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. We seek a colleague with a commitment to shared governance, an expansive view of the academy, and insights into all aspects of university operations. This includes a history of robust and productive administrative, enrollment management, student life, research/scholarship and teaching endeavors, with a strong focus on student experience and outcomes. As the chief academic officer, working with the faculty and senior leadership, the provost will articulate the intellectual construct of the institution, shape and support the goals and strategies of deans, faculty and staff, and facilitate research and innovative education through strategic enhancement and deployment of resources.

The University

The University of Michigan (U-M) was originally founded in Detroit in 1817 and moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. In the middle of the 20th century, the University added two regional campuses: the University of Michigan-Flint and the University of Michigan-Dearborn. All three campuses are governed by the University of Michigan Board of Regents and are overseen by the University President. Chancellors of the regional campuses serve as both chief executive officers of their respective campuses and executive officers of the University as a whole and report directly to the President. The three U-M campuses work together in a synergistic, mutually beneficial fashion.

University of Michigan-Dearborn (UM-Dearborn) was founded in 1959 through a gift of land from the Ford Motor Company and a grant from the Ford Motor Company Fund. UM-Dearborn is located on 200 beautiful acres of the original estate of Henry and Clara Ford, bordering the Rouge River. Though only ten miles from downtown Detroit, the campus neighborhood includes some 70 acres of nature preserve. The city of Dearborn, known for its historical role in the automotive industry, has recently seen significant re- investment from local industries and is today noted for its cultural and ethnic diversity.

As part of the University of Michigan, the Dearborn campus enjoys the resources of a large research university while maintaining the advantages of a moderately-sized institution. Dearborn enrolls more than 9,400 students (approximately 7,200 undergraduates) and offers 600 beds of student housing available through a private-public partnership.

UM-Dearborn welcomes a substantial and growing non-traditional student population, with nearly 40 percent identifying as first-generation college attendees. On average, matriculating students are considered among the best prepared in the Midwest, ranking in the top 15 percent of their high school graduating classes; the most recent incoming class had an average GPA of 3.63 and an average SAT just under 1200. While the majority of Dearborn students live or work in the general region of Southeast Michigan, and some 96 percent are from the state at large, approximately 600 international students are also enrolled on campus. The University is home to well over 100 student organizations, across a broad spectrum of activities. Students generally regard their experience as positive; the Dearborn campus scores at least 5 percent higher than the national average in student satisfaction according to the latest Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Survey.

UM-Dearborn has a 2019-2020 operating budget of $179 million and comprises four major academic units: College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters; College of Engineering and Computer Science; College of Business; and College of Education, Health and Human Services. Approximately 545 faculty members (tenured, tenure-track, and lecturers) and 490 staff members support the work of the University. UM- Dearborn faculty consistently win honors, awards, and financial support for teaching and research excellence.

UM-Dearborn offers 74 Bachelor's and 43 Master's degree programs in engineering, education, health, business, social sciences, and the liberal arts. The University was recently ranked fifth among master's level public universities in the Midwest and offers Ph.D. programs in engineering and an Ed.D. in education. All Ph.D. programs at UM-Dearborn are now affiliated with U-M's Rackham Graduate School. A D.Eng. degree was also recently approved by the Board of Regents. The average class size is 26; 71 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students and the student to teacher ratio is 17:1. The University also offers continuing education programs to a diverse and talented student body, primarily from Southeast Michigan.

The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Accreditation has also been awarded to individual UM-Dearborn programs by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council, among others. UM-Dearborn is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and in 2015, received the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.
