Job Description

The selected candidate would be responsible for the supervision of professional, classified and student employees in the Veterans Education and Transition Services department. Oversight includes ensuring proper guidelines to student is performed consistent with veteran's administration programs, processing of enrollment and applications, reporting as required by external agencies (Department of Veterans Affairs), NSHE, and the State of Nevada as required. The position is also responsible for the processing of student registration, program changes, and reporting required by the Department of Veterans Affairs as a School Certifying Official. Other duties include:
  • Provide support for tactical and strategic planning pertaining to the veteran student population.
  • Support the Assistant Director of Veterans Education and Transition Services.
  • Be an active contributor to discussions and recommends when appropriate to better meet the needs of the students.
  • Serves as direct supervisor for designated staff.
  • Provides training sessions on Veterans Affairs and Veterans Education and Transition Services (VETS) department updates during quarterly staff training events and other campus forums as requested.
  • Research and keep informed on all legislation and other information pertaining to Veteran's educational benefits.
  • Attend any/all training sessions held in VETS, Financial Aid & Scholarships or other locations.
  • Conduct Veterans Affairs Presentations to current and prospective students and their families.
  • Serves as liaison to academic advisors/counselors as designated.
  • Serves as committee member or representative on CSN task forces, work groups, or other committees as assigned.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university AND 3 years of related professional experience in a student support and engagement or higher education setting OR a combination of education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing and formal presentations.
  • Proven experience with a diverse/multicultural student body and workforce.
  • Knowledge of requirements associated with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education program, offerings, requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with VA Once.
  • Proven track record of advising, student development, retention, and student success best practices and strategies.
  • Proven track record engaging and collaborating with students, staff, faculty, managers, and leaders.
  • Demonstrated skills in exercising advanced interpersonal dynamics, especially any special needs in service Veterans.
  • Demonstrated skills in advanced communication techniques including active listening and excellent oral and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to tactfully and effectively handle confrontational issues; maintaining objectivity and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability in utilizing effective mediation, facilitation, and negotiation skills to resolve complex, confidential, and confrontational student/employee issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively organize and prioritize work activities.
