The Production Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for creating, optimizing, and managing multiple production and non-production databases and instances in support of proprietary and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) implementations in both the SQL and MySQL environments at American Public Education, Inc. (APEI).
Essential Functions
Completes the layout and administration of moderately complex database applications to accommodate a variety of user needs.
- Provides support for development, test, and production enterprise environments located in Charles Town, WV, and co-location facility; supports APEI's disaster recovery site and other branch offices.
- Performs database installations and configurations.
- Monitors and tunes database performance for compliance with internal standards.
- Initiates actions to optimize the use of disk space.
- Resolves moderately complex database problems; completes backup, recovery, and tuning of multiple databases.
- Maintains database security in compliance with APEI policies, Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and Payment Card Industry (PCI) security standards.
- Administers and maintains end user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
- Brings new instances on-line and completes integrations into current environment.
- Provides support for multiple environments.
- Performs backups and recoveries as needed.
- Configures and tunes monitoring systems and enterprise scheduler.
- Ensures that patch levels are kept current.
- Identifies opportunities for improvement, makes proposals, and participates in the planning of new and enhanced technologies or services within area of expertise.
- Demonstrates commitment to outstanding customer service by continuously striving to provide the highest possible customer service; makes recommendations for improving service and efficiencies.
- Assists in creating and documenting policies and procedures.
- Clearly communicates problem and resolution process to customers and/or management.
- Participates in the change control process.
- Provides after hours support as needed.
- Manages updates, patches, and upgrades to ensure system availability.
- Monitors and measures performance and costs through regular reporting and summaries of the systems including availability, usage, and capacity.
- Recommends, schedules, and performs improvements, upgrades, and repairs.
- Anticipates, mitigates, identifies, responds to, and resolves problems affecting database performance, efficiency, and availability.
- Ensures 24x7x365 availability for identified internal mission critical data services.
- Develops and documents instructions and guidelines to perform the functions assigned.
- Performs backup/recovery and archiving.
- Provides backup support to other Network Engineers, Systems Engineers, and Technicians.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- Standard office and data center environment in Charles Town, WV.
- Ability to lift boxes up to 50 lbs.
- Core coverage hours of support are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
