Assistant Professor, Physical Chemistry, Tenure Track
Start: Fall 2019 (August 2019)

The Department of Chemistry in the College of Science and Mathematics at California State University, Fresno seeks applicants for a tenure-track academic year position as Assistant Professor in Physical Chemistry. Candidates with expertise in environmental and/or atmospheric chemistry are preferred but outstanding candidates in other areas of expertise will also be considered. While the successful candidate will have teaching responsibilities primarily in the area of undergraduate- and graduate-level physical chemistry, they will also be expected to contribute to the general chemistry and/or analytical chemistry areas. The successful candidate is also expected to develop a productive research program that includes the training and involvement of undergraduate and M.S. graduate students. Instructional workload is 12 weighted teaching units per semester. In the first two years, the department and college typically reduce the teaching load by 50% per semester to allow new faculty extra start-up time for teaching, research, and other professional development efforts.

Qualifications:
Required Education:
  1. Must have an earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Chemistry or closely related field from an accredited (or equivalent) institution.
  2. Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, however, the doctorate degree must be obtained before the first day of appointment, typically August 1, 2019.
Required Experience:
  1. Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; and
  2. University-level teaching experience;
  3. Demonstrated success with research and scholarly activities related to physical chemistry and related topics, including recent peer-reviewed publications in established research journals.
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
  1. Postdoctoral research or industrial experience;
  2. Research experience which complements the research in the department or university;
  3. Potential for obtaining outside funding to support their research; and
  4. Interdisciplinary research project(s) that could result in productive collaborations in the college and university.

About the College and Department:
The Department of Chemistry at California State University, Fresno offers an American Chemical Society recognized BS Chemistry degree, a BS biochemistry degree, a BA chemistry degree designed for pre-health professional students, and a thesis based MS degree in Chemistry to approximately 329 undergraduate and 28 graduate students. The 17 full-time faculty members have a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research, and to the success of our students. Since 1996 when the Provost's Awards were established, Chemistry Department faculty have received five awards in the areas of teaching, research, mentorship or innovation, and three promising new faculty awards.
