Position Information:
The University of California, Riverside Recreation Department seeks a self-motivated, enthusiastic, and proactive professional to assist the Assistant Recreation Director of Outdoor Programs in the student staff development and supervision of the Outdoor Excursions Program. This job is designated as a Career Ladder recruitment, in which it has been posted at two different levels. Education Requirements
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Advanced degree in Outdoor Education, Recreation Administration, Leisure Studies, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, or a related field.

Involvement with professional associations and conferences such as: National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA), Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE), Western Regional Outdoor Leadership Conference (WROLC), and/or Association of Experiential Education (AEE). Coursework with NOLS, Outward Bound, or Wilderness Education Association.

Advanced degree and/or volunteer experience can be used towards the 8 years of experience requirement.

Experience:

Minimum of 8 years of related experience.
Required

Professional experience working in university outdoor programming including equipment rentals and trips.
Preferred

Experience in programming involving outdoor equipment and trips.
Preferred

Experience supervising or mentoring students, maintaining outdoor equipment, student development, and leadership training. Experience working with diverse populations/clientele.
Preferred

Experience leading and advising participants and teaching outdoor skills; ability to lead and supervise in potentially dangerous conditions, and extreme environmental conditions.

Minimum Requirements:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language. Demonstrated ability to incorporate key program information for inclusion in web-based and other marketing materials.
Proficient in at least three of the following, with commitment to continued skill development: sea kayaking, snorkeling, rock climbing, surfing, paddle boarding, sandboarding, bicycle maintenance, map and compass/GPS navigation, teaching wilderness first aid, natural and cultural history.
Advanced knowledge of program activity and best practices. Demonstrated ability to analyze and improve programs and processes as needed.
Demonstrates advanced client service leadership, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills to resolve non-standard issues.
Advanced proficiency in the use of computer applications relevant to job duties.
Familiar with risk management practices for outdoor recreation programs and facilities.
Highly effective service orientation; program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking skills, skills to develop original ideas, creative problem solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.

Advanced knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
