Position Summary
Big Bend Community College invites applications for a Maintenance Mechanic 1 position in the college's Building & Grounds Department. Performs semi-skilled and sub journey work in general maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction duties in several fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, machinist work, and maintains campus facilities.

This position reports to the Building and Grounds Supervisor and works Monday through Friday from 7:00 am-3:30 pm. Hours of work are based on the needs of the department and college and may be adjusted. Positions in the Building & Grounds Department are represented by the Washington Public Employees Association (WPEA).

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is a comprehensive public community college serving a large, rural district in central Washington State. BBCC's main campus is located in the City of Moses Lake (pop. 24,009) in Grant County, situated on the former Larson Air Force Base. In addition to the central campus, BBCC has learning centers in seven outlying communities that provide adult basic education, high school completion, and English Language Learning programs as gateways to college. Essential Job Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Perform semi-skilled repairs, preparation, and installation of equipment in campus buildings to include preparing and/or repairing floors, walls, ceilings, screens, windows, doors, furniture, fixtures, stairs, roofs, plumbing fixtures and water, gas, air, and drain piping. Post-project cleaning as assigned. Participate in renovation, remodel, and replacement projects, as requested.
  • Perform preparatory, painting, and finishing work for interior and exterior campus facilities. Painting will include preparing and cleaning surfaces by use of sandpaper, burners, scrapers, sanding machines, dusters, power washers, power sanders and paint removers. Prior to painting, perform minor repairs in plaster, sheetrock, metal, wood and masonry surfaces by filling with putty, caulks, fiberglass, resin, etc. Post-project cleaning as assigned.
  • Moving to include loading, packing, and unloading items with care. Ensure that no items are damaged while moving. Place equipment and furnishings in the requested positions at the new location.
  • Snow removal to include removing snow from parking lots, roadways, sidewalks, and paths using snow removal equipment such as shovels, plows, snow blowers, ATV's, skid loaders, vehicles with plow blades, and other power and manually operated tools and equipment used to perform snow removal. Apply deicer to parking lots, roadways, sidewalks, and paths.
  • Respond to radio calls and emergent situations to include providing response, assessment, and appropriate remedial action or referral for general radio trouble calls related to plumbing, mechanical issues, facilities concerns, or other items as needed. Provide response and appropriate action for campus safety and security issues as requested. Provide response and appropriate action to off hour emergency calls and suspended operations.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
OTHER WORK ACTIVITIES:
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Ensure no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of SDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  • Ensure compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  • Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college's values.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.

REQUIRED WORK SCHEDULE AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires the physical ability to handle heavy equipment and materials weighing 35-50 pounds daily, 50-75 pounds occasionally, and over 75 pounds in some instances where assistance may be required. Work is performed indoors or outdoors in all seasons, all types of weather and with high noise levels from tools and equipment. Frequently walk from building to building . Occasional use of computer and exposure to terminal screens in performing work assignments. Kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach, and climb ladders frequently during the course of the shift. Frequent need for oral and auditory communications.

Basic work schedule is 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. Hours may be adjusted to meet the needs of the department.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
  • Unencumbered valid driver's license.
  • Current valid automobile insurance.
  • Experience working directly with individuals form diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS :
  • General carpentry and painting experience.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act (WISHA) and the Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) regulations.
  • Ability to use electronic work order and email systems to complete work assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully as a contributing team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple tasks and deal positively with frequent interruptions.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
