Instructor I, Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing

Job Summary
This appointment will be made as an Instructor I in the Department of Marine and Earth Sciences in The Water School.

The Instructor of Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing will teach primarily GIS courses and will provide research support to faculty with GIS and remote sensing (i.e., drone support) needs. The successful candidate will be expected to participate on some university committees, stay current in the field through some form of professional development, and perform other duties as assigned.

Primary teaching responsibilities will be on the main campus.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and teach assigned courses: prepare syllabi and instruction materials, coordinate lectures, evaluate students and maintain highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  • Collaborate with other faculty to provide research support for GIS and remote sensing needs.
  • Stay current with new developments in field of instruction and maintain disciplinary skills through professional development activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Actively serve on university committees and participate in institutional meetings as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications
  • M.S. or equivalent in Geography, Professional Studies, or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution or equivalent accreditation
  • Three years of relevant full-time experience in GIS mapping and database
  • development.
  • Experience with ArcGIS, QGIS, or Carto mapping software.
  • Experience with database programming languages such as SQL, Python, or
  • AcrObjects.
  • Experience with design languages such as HTML, CSS, or JavaScript.
  • Must meet university criteria for appointment as Instructor I


Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred candidates are those whose teaching experience and interests align with the programs and mission of The Water School.
  • GIS Professional (GISP) certification from the GIS Certification Institute
  • Esri Technical Certification
  • Prior experience in instructing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as instructor of record is strongly desirable.
  • Experience operating drones with LiDAR sensing technology and developing digital elevation maps for coastal regions.
  • Experience in developing and training others to develop GIS Story Maps


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Familiarity with and use of diverse and innovative teaching approaches to engage students and ensure student learning.
  • Ability to contribute effectively and collegially to a positive, dynamic, civil, and inclusive learning and working environment.
