Position Description:

PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Director for Outreach and Student Support Programs, the Early Assessment Program Coordinator oversees the operations of CSUMB's Early Assessment Program (EAP). California State University (CSU) - Early Assessment Program /Academic Preparation Program (EAP/APP) is a new effort funded initiative by the CSU Chancellor's Office with the objective to assist educational agencies to bridge the gap between high school standards and college expectations in order to decrease the number of entering college students who require remediation in English and/or mathematics.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Responsible for the collaboration of outreach services, policies, requirements and procedures to ensure that standards in these activities are aligned with CSU placement standards. Partners with other CSUMB efforts and institutions to leverage resources and services to assist high school students meet CSU eligibility. Plans and evaluates processes related to student outreach activities.
  • Responsible for identifying specific program needs and developing approaches for implementation to meet program goals. Provides planning to develop creative solutions to integrate approaches across organizational areas.
  • Oversees the communication, publication, and working with local high schools and outreach programs regarding the augmented California Standards Test (CST). Recruits high school teachers to support students in their preparation for the CST in English and mathematics and other interventions to bridge deficiencies. Encourages local high English faculty to participate in CSU sponsored professional development for English classes to prepare local high school faculty to understand CST standards and to develop a plan to support students interested in attending CSU who fail to demonstrate proficiency in English.
  • Effectively communicates and works collaboratively with Early Outreach staff, service providers, and campus offices to evaluate collaboration practices and implement effective procedures for delivery of outreach services. Participates in the strategic planning for the Outreach and Student Support Programs, in cooperation with both internal office staff and other university offices. Assists in planning and developing institutional strategies that encourage student access and retention.
  • Participates on outside committees that function in cooperation with state agencies to evaluate the effectiveness of program administration, and to make recommendations for changes.
  • Oversees all areas of programming for EAP/APP, train all staff, meet all auditing and reporting requirements.
  • May work with University Promise in efforts to bridge the gap between high school standards and college expectations in order to decrease the number of entering college students who require remediation in English and/or mathematics.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets program data to write annual and performance reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multiaged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.


Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A masters degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.


Specialized Skills:
Strong communication and organizational skills. Sophisticated technology skills, and a working knowledge of a student information system such as Banner or PeopleSoft. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above.


Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree in related field is highly desirable. Additional relevant experience. Second language fluency. Highly desirable: Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the Core Values of applied, active, and project-based learning activities; interdisciplinary; multicultural and global perspectives; technological sophistication; service learning; ethical reflection and practice; and collaboration. Experience working with a diverse and multicultural population and performing community services. Demonstrated technical literacy.

Technical fluency with Banner, Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and will be required to participate in annual training and to immediately forward to the Clery Director all reports of crimes brought to their attention pursuant to the Clery Act and California State Education Code, Chapter 15.5, of the Donahue Higher Education Act, Section 67380.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the Universitys liability coverage.
  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

  • PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

    Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. Primary work location will be Ryan Ranch location but may require travel to CSUMB Main Campus. Any travel reimbursement will be in accordance with the CSUMB travel policy.
