Position Description
Directs, plans, coordinates and supervises the operation and activities of a specialized unit or small department; develops and implements policies and procedures, administers the budget, organizes tasks and sets priorities. Serves as liaison with university personnel and community at large. Works under general supervision with broad latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Major/Essential Functions
Responsible for the efficient operation of the Fire Marshal's office, directing the oversight of fire safety operations, plans and procedures. Administrative oversight of office; develop and maintain annual budget, planning, direction, and goal setting of department.

Develop and implement fire safety training programs and emergency procedures in compliance with TTU, state and federal regulations. Oversees development and delivery of fire safety training exercises, equipment operation, and emergency procedures. Manages all aspects of the TTU Fire/Life Safety Program.

Conducts inspections of essential fire equipment. Makes recommendations and ensures code compliance. Leads coordination with State Fire Marshal for routine inspection of alert and sprinkler systems for campus facilities.

Oversees and leads team of Fire Inspectors during daily operations and emergency events. Leads fire investigations on all fire related incidents occurring on Texas Tech property.

Provides emergency response to all fire related incidents during normal business hours and after hours as required. Coordinates with law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel during emergencies and investigations. During special events, serves in the Incident Command Post as a member of the command staff leading fire prevention and fire safety operations.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area required plus five years progressively responsible management experience. Additional education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 10 years experience as a Fire Investigator and Fire Inspector.
  • 10 years experience in fire prevention and fire code enforcement.
