Position Information
The Director is responsible for implementing the overall operations, crafting and implementation of the mission and vision for the African Student Programs. The Director manages systems and processes; develops policies; educates the campus community about African Student Programs; serves as a resource and consultant to students, faculty, staff as well as community members to create a meaningful and transformative student experience for all students.


Minimum Requirements
Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Strong knowledge of University and departmental policies, processes, and procedures.
Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Strong skills in active listening, critical thinking, negotiation, reasoning, organizing, written and verbal communication; multitasking and intercultural competence and uses these skills to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specialization.
Knowledge of risk assessment principles along with the ability to evaluate risks and the likelihood of consequences.
Strong leadership skills to motivate employees and influence attitudes and behaviors.
Skills in project and program management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Knowledge of emerging best practices in assessment of African Student Programs, Cultural Centers and programming. Ability to train and facilitate a variety of audiences to discuss complex equity and climate issues.
Excellent communication skills and political acumen to ensure that all stakeholders, colleagues, and students are informed of programming, highly sensitive issues as appropriate and as it pertains to this student population. Ability to adhere and identify instances where high levels of confidentiality is required to work through sensitive climate issues when a variety of stakeholders are engaged.
Ability to navigate campus and local constituencies gracefully using sound judgement, political acumen and discretion.


Preferred Qualifications
Ability to work with Student Affairs Information Systems to develop appropriate assessment tools and data analysis approaches to bridge assessment and practice.

Understands equity and intersectionality from a sophisticated framework that can be actualized in practice.
