Position Overview

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of the Student Experience (Dean), will be responsible for building an engaged and empowered student body prioritizing co-curricular engagement, leadership and social justice, self-efficacy, conflict resolution and social and community responsibility. This position is a senior leadership position in the Division of Student Affairs that will provide strategic leadership and will be integral in developing and providing accountability for strategic planning and achievement of key performance indicators.

This position will provide counsel to the Vice President for Student Affairs on matters pertaining to the student experience and will be responsible for coordinating with the four academic colleges as well as other relevant services to develop a structure that supports graduate on-ground, graduate online, undergraduate on-ground and undergraduate online students. This includes services related to food insecurity, housing, commuter assistance, violence prevention, bias reporting and individualized case management. Further, the Dean will provide leadership, in conjunction with the Vice President for Student Affairs and in partnership with student affairs and academic affairs staff, for the enhancement of student leadership programming and the development of co-curricular pathways and residential engagement.

The Dean, in collaboration with the Vice President for Student Affairs, will provide strategic leadership for the re-organization and alignment of the Division of Student Affairs which includes first-year experience and first-year programs, student leadership and activities, student conduct and community standards, student assistance and support (for graduate and undergraduate students), spiritual life, athletics, health services, counseling and residential life. Further, the Dean will provide significant leadership for the university's the Campus Assessment, Response and Evaluation team. This position will also be a key partner with advancement and will have opportunities to engage with Simmons University alumni.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel or closely related field is required or the equivalent of a bachelor's degree and significant related experience; terminal degree (PhD, EdD, JD) is preferred;
  • Minimum of 10 years of relative experience in co-curricular program planning and leadership development and education, and progressive responsibility for designing and delivering programs and services that support the student experience.
  • Experience successfully managing/supervising teams and providing strategic vision, reducing barriers and transforming organizational structures, thinking and outcomes; fostering employee development, and performance management skills;
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning,
  • Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students at all levels in a complex and diverse environment;
  • Significant experience working with crisis management, student communications, and high need populations with a lens toward empowerment, creating opportunities to develop and foster self-efficacy and life skills, and empowering students to use their voice effectively;
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of Title IX and EEOC policies required;
  • Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures;
  • Experience with change management, diversity, equity, inclusion, and creating spaces and experiences that foster a sense of belonging, a sense of connection, campus pride and community is a must;
  • Experience working with alumni relations, advancement and grant writing is preferred, but not required.
  • Skill in budget preparation and fiscal management
  • Comfort and willingness responding to crisis situations during and outside of regular business hours.
