The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Counselor, Disabled Student Services & Programs, Foothill College.

DESCRIPTION:

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about the challenges of students with disabilities population and an experienced advocate for their needs and educational goal attainment. Strong communication skills are essential. The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter with the ability to build rapport with students, faculty, staff and administration.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Dean, Disability Resource Center and Veteran's Services, the DRC counselor will:
  • Provide academic, personal, career/vocational and transfer counseling and instructions to students with disabilities at Foothill College and its satellite campus (FHDA Educational Center in Sunnyvale).
  • Be responsible for the development of educational plans, monitoring of student progress and conducting any follow-up activities.
  • Assess and authorize disability accommodations.
  • Act as an advocate regarding student performance and retention.
  • Serve as a campus resource to faculty and staff regarding strategies for working with students with disabilities.
  • Provide educational presentations for the campus and community regarding disabilities, services and programs.
  • Be responsible for developing and maintaining liaisons and networks with off campus programs, schools and agencies service people with disabilities.
  • Teach counseling or disability related courses as needed.
  • Advocate on behalf of students with disabilities.
  • Participate in college and division assignments and other department responsibilities.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's degree in rehabilitation counseling OR Master's degree in counseling, guidance counseling, student personnel, clinical or counseling psychology, education counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, marriage, family and child counseling, or a Bachelor's degree in marriage and family therapy or in marriage, family and child counseling and possession of a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT); and either 15 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work related to people with disabilities, or completion of six semester units, or the equivalent of a graduate-level counseling practicum or counseling field work courses, in a post-secondary Disabled Students Programs and Services program or in a program dealing with people with disabilities, or two years of fulltime experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: (A) Counseling for students with disabilities; or (B) Counseling in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities are for persons with disabilities, or the equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. One year experience providing counseling or guidance to community college students.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of learning disabilities diagnostics and criteria.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of role of community college counselor in providing transfer and career information.
  4. Experience counseling adults with psychological disabilities.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the field of career guidance and vocational preparation.
  6. Knowledge and experience related to community organizations, social services and resources serving students with disabilities.
  7. Knowledge of retention strategies.
  8. Knowledge of disability culture and identity.
  9. Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning.
  10. Awareness of challenges and obstacles faced by students with disabilities in pursuing their education goals.
  11. Knowledge and experience with computers, software and assistive technology related to disability counseling.
  12. Knowledge of state and federal laws addressing the rights of people with disabilities.

HIRING RANGE: $70,499.00 - $109,280.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, Tenure-track, 11-months per year
