Essential Functions:
The ideal candidate will share the Madera Community College Center's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. We currently enroll over 5,000 students of which 66% are Latinx, 1% are Filipino, 6% are Asian, 3% are Black/African American, 19% are White, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% are multiracial. MCCC is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.
Reporting to the Dean of Student Services at the Madera/Oakhurst Community College Centers, the Counselor will cover a full range of general counseling responsibilities, which include the following:

Provide comprehensive counseling services to students, including academic, career, personal and life transitions counseling on an appointment and walk in basis;
Assist in the organization and implementation of matriculation activities, such as orientation, counseling and follow-up services to students;
Assist students with major selection, developing student education plans (SEPs), aligned with their educational goals and career pathways;
Assist with the development and implementation of the Guided Pathways, and the Student Equity Achievement (SEA), and other student success initiatives;
Assist and collaborate in developing programs and student support services with an emphasis on veterans needs and counseling services that will improve student access to college, increase student retention and completion rates;
Work collaboratively with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives and provision of counseling in support of guided pathways and other programs, including but not limited to first year experience programs;
Assist, as needed, with articulation, student outreach, and recruitment activities;
Provide assistance and referrals to on/off campus resources and student support services including Admissions & Records, EOPS, CalWORKs, Career/Transfer & Employment Center, DSP&S, Financial Aid, Academic Success Centers, STEM, TRiO, and off-campus community resources;
Participate in meetings, conferences, trainings, and other professional development activities to maintain the expertise required to provide accurate and reliable information and support to students seeking to complete a certificate, associate degree, or transfer;
Providing assistance to new and prospective students with college applications and college orientation;
Assist and maintain program website to ensure content is accurate for students to access;
Develop and teach counseling courses such as career planning, academic success and college introduction;
Serve and attend department, college, and district committees as needed;
Monitor and implement programs in compliance with federal, State, district, and college regulations, policies, and procedures;
Provide counseling services, as needed, during days, evenings, and weekends at both the Madera and Oakhurst Community College Centers;
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Student Services;
Develop and/or revise curriculum and programs, including program review and developing and accessing student learning outcomes for courses and programs to improve student learning;
Participate in the accreditation process;
Communicate effectively with students and staff and maintain effective working relationships;
Develop and/or utilize technologies for classroom presentations;
Participate in appropriate professional meetings and workshops;
Work with colleagues within and beyond the discipline to implement the guided pathways concept to promote student success and completion;
Participate in student recruitment activities; and
Otherwise fulfil all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling;

OR
A valid California Community College Credential;

OR
The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)

Desirable Qualifications:

Experience in developing Student Education Plans (SEPs) for community college students;
Experience with advising students on the requirements for Associate degrees and Associate Degree for Transfer and general education patterns for both CSU & UC;
Experience participating in outreach, recruitment and matriculation activities;
Demonstrated understanding of Student Equity and Achievement (SEA), Guided Pathways, and/or other student success initiatives;
Experience with counseling and advising Veterans and their dependents;
Experience developing Student Education Plans that meet the requirements of the Veterans Administration;
Demonstrated ability to design and implement innovative teaching methodologies;
Commitment to interacting and working successfully as a team with instructors, and other colleagues;
Enthusiasm for teaching and assisting students to succeed;
Capacity to contribute to the total operation of Student Services including Department, Division, and College responsibilities;
Demonstrated ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and a variety of teaching modalities including distance learning;
Ability to use current educational technology methods and tools;
Knowledge and experience in the development and assessment of student learning outcomes;
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing;
Strong computer skills;
Memberships in professional organizations;
Recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
Willingness to examine and remediate ones relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom;
Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth; and
Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment:
177 -181 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary is $55,650 $85,675 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,082 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview. Interviews are tentatively scheduled the week of April 1st. The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the ecommended candidates. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews which are tentatively scheduled for the week of April 15th or 22nd. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
