Pasadena City College is hiring a full-time, tenure-track Computer Information Systems (CIS) Instructor commencing with the 2023-2024 academic year.
CIS instructs students in a wide range of information communication and technology (ICT) courses in Microsoft enterprise system administration, Cisco enterprise network/security No-lP/wireless administration, cybersecurity, database development and administration, software development, and full stack web development. CIS plans to offer new courses in data science, big data, business and data analytics, intelligence and warehousing, block chain technology, robotic programming, machine learning, Amazon Web Services (AWS) DevOps, Cisco DevNet, and Internet of Things (loT).

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS INSTRUCTOR:

  • Teach classes in this discipline/area
  • Participate in professional development activities that support best practices for teaching a diverse population of both major and non-major students
  • Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum
  • Participate in the recruitment, outreach, and development of internship opportunities for students
  • Participate with faculty to develop and assess student learning outcomes. Use the results to improve teaching and learning
  • Undertake the divisional and professional responsibilities of a regular faculty member
  • Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of students with differing learning modalities and abilities
  • Knowledge of current practices in distance education including learning management systems such as Canvas
  • Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles
  • Knowledgeable about culturally sustaining pedagogical techniques and effective practices for engaging African American, Latinx, and Indigenous groups who are historically underrepresented and underserved
  • Recent experience working with minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shapes patterns of participation and outcomes
  • Willingness to examine and remediate ones instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning techniques
  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of object oriented and procedural programming languages
  • Proficiency in various programming languages which includes but not limited to Java, C++, Pearl, Python, R, SQL, JavaScript, PHP, and Ruby on Rails
  • Proficiency in software engineering / software development life cycle / secure development life cycle
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience and proficiency in current teaching and learning technologies
  • Commitment to stay abreast of current topics in programming languages and related fields
  • Willingness to take the lead in curriculum development for the department and program especially in program language related areas
  • Experience with Student Learning Outcomes and assessment methods
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of the campus community
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, other on-campus groups, off­ campus community groups and educational partners
  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic environment with students of varying academic preparation and learning styles
  • Demonstrated understanding of career pathways and transfer/workforce opportunities as they relate to the field
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students




MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of professional experience
OR Associate's degree AND six (6) years of professional experienceOR
Valid California Community College Instructor CredentialOR
The equivalent
Degree must be shown as conferred on transcript. Some degrees may require equivalency. When equivalency is requested, the file will be reviewed by PCC's Equivalency Committee. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide ample documentation to support equivalent qualifications.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following (listed alphabetically):
    • Data Analytics
    • Database Development and Administration
    • DevOps and Cloud Computing (AWS, Azure, and Google)
    • Full Stack Web Development
    • Machine Learning services in the Cloud Computing (AWS, Azure, and Google)
    • Software Development/Engineering
  • Hold valid programming language industry certifications
  • Minimum of four (4) years of full-time recent experience as a software developer/engineer/analyst and/or a full stack web developer
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience teaching programming (intro and advanced) courses at the college level or equivalent
  • Experience using learning management systems
  • Documented experience in generating financial resources through grants/contracts
