Basic Function:
The clinical teaching assistant, under the direction of a Lead Instructor approved by the Board of Registered Nursing, supervise students in the clinical setting and fulfill the expected responsibilities as listed below.

To share concerns with the Lead Instructor in all matters related to students in the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program.

Specific Responsibilities:
1. Knowledge of current nursing theories of practice skills used in the clinical settings.
2. Knowledge of principles and procedures of clinical record keeping.
3. Ability to meet health requirements of the hospital and/or agency to which assigned.
4. Understanding of course levels, goals, objectives and requirements.
5. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and in a timely manner, both orally and in writing.
6. Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
7. Supervise up to 10 students in a clinical setting.
8. Confer with Lead Instructor in the identification of clinical objectives.
9. Plan learning experiences that reinforce and illustrate the clinical objectives of the course.
10. Maintain records of students' performance and confer with the Lead Instructor in establishing guidelines for clinical performance.
11. Grade nursing care plans and other assignments in accordance with the Lead Instructor's guidelines and clinical objectives.
12. Attend and participate in department faculty meetings.
13. Maintains currency/competency in subject matter and/or service area.
14. Develop and maintain a positive learning environment for students.
15. Provide orientation to the facility for the students on the first day of class, and discuss orally the clinical course content and objectives.
16. Ability to proctor in the distance education classroom and skills lab.


Education and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:

Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse; And
Possession of a valid California Vocational or Registered Nurse license And
Possession of a Current Healthcare Provider BLS card And
An Associate Degree in Nursing or higher degree from an accredited college or university And
At least two years continuous experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care within the last 5 years; And
A demonstrated sensitivity to students with diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and student with disabilities.

Applicants must submit to and pass a drug-screen test as part of their pre-employment physical examination.

  • Knowledge of and ability to accurately interpret laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to Nursing Programs and the practice of Nursing.
  • Ability to understand and support the development of learner-centered instructional programs, the teaching-learning process, and uses of instructional technology with emphasis on Nursing educational programs.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and to work effectively and harmoniously with students, colleagues, staff, and others.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the continuous improvement of teaching and learning; ability to create an environment conducive to the development of instructional and service innovations.
  • Willingness to work with students having a wide range of skills, motivation, and academic or vocational goals.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California Community Colleges mission and philosophy.
