Position Information
The Athletics Academic Counselor/Life Skills Coordinator is responsible for conducting an academic support program for student-athletes in designated sports while promoting an environment of academic excellence and fostering student success and retention. This individual will monitor and enhance the opportunity for progress towards degree, graduation, and continuing eligibility in accordance with UCR, Big West Conference, and NCAA regulations. In addition, this person will be the primary advisor for our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and will serve on the Student-Athlete Life Skills Committee. Please note: The budgeted hiring range for this position is $45,300 and $48,000.


Minimum Requirements
Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
Ability to operate within an atmosphere of compliance, integrity, and within the scope and intent of NCAA, conference, and University regulations. Compliance-related activities and paperwork must be accomplished and/or submitted in a complete and timely manner.
Strong commitment to working with under-represented student populations and the ability to work successfully with students of diverse backgrounds.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with faculty, staff, administrators, coaches and student-athletes. Skill in independently composing letters, memos, reports and other written communication materials using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing and proofreading skills.
Knowledge and experience in analyzing problems and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs.
Demonstrated skill assessing academic difficulties, developing appropriate remedies, and evaluating and assessing effectiveness of student support intervention.
Articulation skills to listen and advise/counsel diverse personalities using sound and mature judgment.
Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office applications, or other equivalent software, the Internet, email messaging, and web-based software applications.
Exceptional interpersonal and human relations skills.
Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement.
Good organizational and customer service skills with the ability to efficiently and effectively handle multiple work priorities.
Knowledge of University, college, and major requirements, policies and procedures, including policies on handling student records and confidential documents.
Knowledge of personal growth and development areas, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
Demonstrated interest and effectiveness in working with students including the ability to relate to students using varied communication techniques and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to responsibly handle confidential information.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.


Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, especially in regards to Academic Progress Program (APP) and the Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.

Knowledge of the University of California degree system and the ability to read and decipher academic degree audits.

Familiarity with research methodologies and research designs.
